I looked it up because of your same skepticism. The manual actually says high octane (at least 91) is “highly recommended.” I don’t understand paying the I’m A Leader Not A Follower Unless It’s A Dark Place Then You’re Going First shirt Besides,I will do this money for a high performance car and being cheap on the fuel. I always put premium in my Subaru STI. I just looked at my manual, it says recommend 95 RON (USA uses different numbers) but 91 RON is accepted. It’s impossible to buy fuel lower than 95 RON in the UK. Eh, if you are just driving it around you aren’t going to benefit from the difference. Now if you are going out for a track day then yeah dont cheap out. Weirdly, my mom always used the mid-grade stuff, I think the 89, on a 1990s Oldsmobile sedan. I have no idea why, we’re not the kind of family who would drive a car calling for anything beyond the regular gasoline. The funny thing is unless the engine actually requires it (runs at a much higher compression ratio) higher octane gas is less efficient. Just like low octane gas is less efficient in a modern high compression engine. Yeah the only difference is that higher octane means the fuel burns more slowly so high compression engines don’t suffer from premature ignition. It’s not burn slower. It’s that you have an internal combustion engine. All engines basically have some method of spraying fuel into a valve where it mixes with air and the compression of it when ignited by a spark plug creates combustion.

That’s engine knocking and can cause damage. AFAIK, it doesn’t combust as easily – hence it’s used in engines with higher compression ratios that are prone to knocking. The only time I think it’s worth putting high octane in an engine that’s designed for lower octane is storage – and that’s only because it’s hard to find lower octanes without ethanol. (Ethanol absorbs moisture when it sits for a long time.) I know my local tuner can really add horsepower to turbo cars if they run E85 but their gas mileage goes to hell. A long time ago before we had the fuel standards we do now it was possible to get cleaner gas from different brands and from different octane levels. But this wasn’t due to octane, just they made the gas differently. Now it’s all the same except for the additives that some brands use that no engineer has shown does anything observable With how common turbo cars are now, there are a lot of cars that will run happily on 87 but only make the advertised power numbers on 93. My Fiesta ST was this way, my Elantra doesn’t say it needs 93 for peak power but you can watch the engine pull timing if you run it on 87. That being said the LS that I’m assuming is in the truck from the OP doesn’t need or make use of 93. It can make use of E85 for more power though ago the cost of fuel mileage.
