Also if 10 and 12 hour shifts are seen as these magical fixes what’s wrong with 6? Most people are only productive about 3 hours of work so 6 makes more logical sense to improve efficiency. I feel like a more manageable approach is a 4-10 system rather than a 5-8. You still get 40 hours a week working 10 hours a day for 4 days and you’re guaranteed that one day off will be a weekday. Everyone would have one weekday to take care of anything that they need taken care of, as opposed to a 5-8 where if you’re lucky your days off include one weekday Nah. Society needs to set a plan to go to 36 hr, then 30, 24, 15…whatever…over a series of years. Automation and AI are making human labor less and less needed. Governments have been managing the issue so far by reducing the number of humans in the labor pool. Child labor laws, compulsory schooling, college funding, college for all, lowering mandatory retirement age. But it can only go so far. If we turn around some day and suddenly a bunch of people are out of work and not needed, and society was till set up on a 40hr a week system, it’s going to be massive shock and create huge social turmoil to adjust. If we gradually ease into it things will go much easier.

The dangerous part is- people tend to think very linearly. But technological improvement moves exponentially. The advancements you think are decades or a century away, might happen in years. But we need to realize that this time we are the horses. Why not just do it in 2 shifts instead of 3 and have both be ~6 hours. Like 8am-2pm and 2pm-8pm if everything was opened from at least 8am to 8pm there would always be time to get anything you needed. Would also be pretty nice since the work life balance could be better and it could be more flexible with people working 4,5,6,or 7 days a week total depending on the hours they’d want to accrue. Also imagine getting off of work at 2pm or 8pm both options sound MUCH better than 5pm
