They are so polite. But underneath all of that politeness is prejudice against people of color. Against foreigners who’ve moved here. And so on. The only thing that will put this shit behind us is a total rethinking of police. Defunding won’t help. The entire concept of what police are doing needs to change, to be peacekeepers and public servants rather than dominating enforcers and punishers. We need to hire a different sort of person, train them in a different way, define their mission different, and hold them personally accountable for abuse.
