You are correct. I started noticing this when maturing in meditation that some friends and relatives were living in their mind/self created hell fueled by themselves. So much self created suffering. Stress is a problem that people react towards. Some people react more than others. If a person learns to react less then this will help. This involves learning a type of meditation that allows the I wonder if tacos think about me too T-Shirt and by the same token and mind to rest in stillness. One relaxes so the mind slows and stills. The time spent in mental rest is very helpful. Yet, relaxation is quite different from focus. Focus can take the mind to a monotone. Relaxation involves a lessening of mental activity that allows the mind to become still. When you are still you dimly know that you are awake. It is afterwards that you know of calm and feeling re-energised.

The forum requires that people disclose what method they practice so i do that. In addition, there are many methods with different ideas and so just providing information without the I wonder if tacos think about me too T-Shirt and by the same token and method is meaningless. I aim to help rather than hinder and that is another reason why I mention Meares in many posts. I actually haven’t heard about this psychiatrist, but what they say checks out even in traditional philosophies like Advaita Vedanta and Buddhism. Mediation isn’t just about learning to focus, it is an exercise in awareness, where you learn to relax and firm your awareness at your will. An advanced enough practitioner can go into the low-state of mental activity during a conversation. Pure relaxation involves just that. In the deepest state you only dimly know that you are awake. Firming awareness to me sounds like focus. What is involved in Meares method is not focus, trying, effort, concentration etc. In Meares method, there is learning the stillness whilst not moving. Also, there is cultivating the calm and ease whilst active in daily living. Living a calm and active life. Meares developed his method and so whilst different people do learn at different rates it is learnt fairly quickly, in days, weeks, months rather than longer periods. Anxiety holds people back and so if one learns calm one can do a bit more than before. Rather than lots of effort one can learn to do things in ease ie being very relaxed. Both these aspects help to change the balance from struggle to action.
