They know the strategy is fucked, but want to be able to say, “I was carrying out Putin’s plan” for as long as possible, both to avoid Putin blaming them for not doing his plan, but also to make the war look as least likely to succeed as soon as possible. To the Russian generals, winning the war and so having to occupy a Ukraine that is ‘restive’ and being supplied weapons and explosive from the EU for the next 20 years is not the best outcome for them.
