Teacher’s would show up drunk, high, party every night, and not care about the students or teaching. Schools were terrible to the teachers. No money for supplies, bad pay, you would have ‘training’ 5 times/year that would put you in debt to the school. The schools would ‘help’ you get an apartment when you first arrived, which amounted to them pressuring you to take a really shitty apartment from someone they had a deal and would get a commission. I switched to online teaching during covid and havent been happier. The good schools that pay well are a massive headache of internal politics and power struggles, and the language centers, as you pointed out, are a joke.
