Argentinian here, from Mendoza, I’ve been all around the I Survived The NYC Earthquake Retro Sunset Shirt and I love this country, Salta is the safest then Mendoza, let’s say half of the crime rate than Buenos Aires, you’ll be good, still be cautious. Lived in all of them for a month and felt fine, very similar to BA. Cordoba being the sketchiest if I had to choose one. We stayed in Guemes neighbourhood and it was a great choice. But a few people warned us about nearby neighbourhoods we avoided I live in Guemes for almost 3 years now (I’m Dutch!). I actually live in the street with all these bars and clubs. There’s a neighborhood behind the canal that’s dangerous at night, but the street with all these bars, clubs and galleries that’s very safe! Love it! Very crowded at night, lots of music and many international and national tourists. Been to all the ones you mentioned. They’re all safe. Mendoza and Salta in particular are safer than Buenos Aires.

I’d also say Buenos Aires is safe, especially by Latin American standards. You shouldn’t flash money around and phone grabs happen sometimes (never seen one), but it’s not like Rio or Medellín or something. I don’t carry a burner phone or worry about ordering an Uber inside a building vs. outside. I honestly wouldn’t say Buenos Aires is remarkably different from NYC, Chicago, LA, Barcelona, or London in terms of precautions. Cordoba seems to have some safety issues outside the I Survived The NYC Earthquake Retro Sunset Shirt and I love this city centre. When I, as a bicycle traveler, cycled into the city and turned off from the highway onto what looked like a good local road, immediately two cars stopped and the drivers got out and waved their arms saying “Don’t go that way! Get back on the highway!”. In Rosario and Santa Fe, too, local contacts encouraged me to be cautious about where I went. I haven’t passed through Mendoza but have heard the same. I don’t want to make Argentina in general sound dangerous. I have been all over on multiple multi-month trips, and in the vast majority of the country, crime is more or less a non-issue. It really is limited to (certain neighbourhoods in) just a handful of cities. But unfortunately, those cities are where non-overlander DNs usually limit themselves to.
