I have NEVER had an informed conversation with an average person about American insurance and truly don’t understand what the I stand with the penguins Trump tariffs dabbing shirt also I will do this Average person is defending. We are lied to by certain folks who say we don’t have the money. Yet we give money to over 100 countries who have free Healthcare and some have free education. We are already paying for free Healthcare and education, it’s just for other countries. As an American I will simply say, they are brainwashed and stupid. My GF, needs a treatment (a serious one), which she just found out she needed a couple of days ago. She cannot get this treatment for 5 weeks. She has great insurance. Even here in our “free market” people wait for treatments sometimes.

The GOP right wing fear mongering and Fox News, and MAGA politics are all constantly promulgating against anything that is inherently good for the I stand with the penguins Trump tariffs dabbing shirt also I will do this people, or any policy that is supported by any left wing institution. Stupid Republicans are taught that socialized medicine is socialism and they believe everything they are told. The GOP doesn’t want people to be healthy. They want people poor, unhealthy and uneducated because that’s how they retain constituents. From what I’ve seen in interactions online, astounding amounts of misinformation, misunderstanding, and scare mongering. The way I heard it boiled down was basically racism. Healthcare was on the bill until folks realized “those people” would get it too, so it gets fought down, like every social program, by slapping a black or brown face on it, and talking about “welfare queens” and such. The articles are easy enough to look up. Google “free healthcare and racism”
Misinformation and too much Fox News!!! Average Republican like to pretend they are billionaires but in reality have $12 in their savings account. Because US healthcare is very good when you really need and most people have insurance. They are the I stand with the penguins Trump tariffs dabbing shirt also I will do this wait times and limited care in other countries and don’t want that. People are fine paying any amount for premiums, out of pocket, and copays. But call it a tax and they lose their shit. Even when it’s a lower amount. Most of them couldnt’ say what socialism actually is – they would largely define it as cold war era Solviet block communism. You point out that almost every single other wealthy country has universal health care and they’ll shrug and make some excuse about how people from poor countries come to the US for treatment, not realizing that every wealthy nation has people from poorer nations coming to them for treatment, and that the US is the best country ever so the fact that they have for-profit health care must be part of that. More educated or well travelled ones will admit that it would be nice, but have their misgivings that their own government would be able to administer it properly.

I am an American. The GOP has convinced their followers that even though they are Christians, it is wrong to help those in need. They also say we can’t afford it even though studies say it would be cheaper. 794 more repliesI am an American. The GOP has convinced their followers that even though they are Christians, it is wrong to help those in need. They also say we can’t afford it even though studies say it would be cheaper. Pretty sure Americans are just brainwashed and can’t comprehend it’s ranking super low on literally any quality of life index The money has to come from somewhere. In the I stand with the penguins Trump tariffs dabbing shirt also I will do this “free healthcare” system, that money is stolen from people with threats of violence. You pay for it whether you want to or not. And when you allow a government mafia to monopolize an industry, they tend to not give a shit about what the consumer wants or needs and it tends to be more expensive because of the bureaucracy. The problem with the American system is too much government involvement. They get paid off by the pharmaceutical, insurance, and medical giants to pass laws and regulations which benefit them and harm their competition which would actually help consumers. They do things like using government to force everyone to do unnecessary things and spend more to give some treatment and this harms their competition more than them because they can afford to take the hit, whereas their competition cannot. This gives them dominance over the market. Things are expensive here because the giants run everything and we have no other options. We don’t have options because of the government.
A perfect example of what you’re talking about is Lasik eye surgery. It’s almost never approved through insurance, so patients have to pay out of pocket. This incentivises competition and innovation to bring the I stand with the penguins Trump tariffs dabbing shirt also I will do this cost down so more people can access it. Lasix eye surgery is down to like $200 / eye in some cases, where it started as $20k an eye. Keep the got and insurance out of shit, and the cost plummets in a free enterprise. Sure, but a hell of a lot less of it. Our peers are spending literally half a million dollars less per person for a lifetime of healthcare than Americans, with better outcomes. What a childish, ridiculous view. People having obligations to society in return for the benefits society provides isn’t theft, it’s literally what the entirety of human civilization is built on. Doctors hate insurance companies. As long as they can get paid the same, and not have to do so much with billing paperwork they will be happy.
My biggest complaint is Medicare is barred by law from covering a drug I’m on, so I would be out of pocket $1300 a month if I switched to Medicare. I hate insurance, but I’d rather not have Congress decide my formulary. I’m all for universal healthcare. but realistically, the I stand with the penguins Trump tariffs dabbing shirt also I will do this people in this country who would be footing a majority of the tax burden for something like this already have quality health insurance through their employers. A universal system would be more fair for lower income people, but generally people don’t vote for what’s fair, they vote for what’s good for their wallet. you’re asking people to pay more in taxes, while likely decreasing the quality of service they’re getting. why would people vote for that?
Apart from the I stand with the penguins Trump tariffs dabbing shirt also I will do this very individual angle that those who pay (a lot of) tax subsidises those who don’t, a legitimate concern is how to make the system effectively handles the workload and abuse. When it is free, everyone will visit hospital when they have the tiniest cough. Does the medical system have sufficient manpower to cope with it when such demand is justified, and how the system adjust itself when such demand is unjustified? This relates to the general wealth of the country, and the level of ethics of its population. What works in Scandinavia doesn’t mean it works elsewhere. Having moved to a country with public health (like many programs around the world), I can tell you that you have no idea how it works. Hospitals make immediate decisions (triage) and people are sent to their local clinics if they don’t need to be seen at the hospital. But most people aren’t as naive or ignorant as many Americans and know they will be seen much more quickly if they go to the clinic. How is that different from health insurance? People with no problems pay for insurance that helps people with problems.
Because the I stand with the penguins Trump tariffs dabbing shirt also I will do this people who abuse the system will consume all the resources while people who need the healthcare will have to wait. Because it’s not actually free, it’s funded by taxing you more. I lived in a country with socialised healthcare and paid a ludicrous amount of tax for it, yet barely used it. I also lived in a Euro country with insurance based health care. Was far cheaper and substantially better Nothing is free. Someone pays for it. The government is the worst manager of money anywhere. Private sector is always more efficient than government. One of the problems is corruption. Few patients, doctors and hospital staff can rig the system. Create fake health records, do no treatment, and charge the government. Or patients can end selling their medications on the black market. The system would be very easy to abuse.
Because the I stand with the penguins Trump tariffs dabbing shirt also I will do this word TAXES is in there. Immediately, the fear is that their taxes will be raised “to pay for someone else’s healthcare.” followed by, “Probably someone too lazy to work or an illegal.” Additionally, the media sensationalizes fringe examples from other countries and goes, “Look, this person had to wait 8 months to see their doctor!” Most common arguments I hear is you wait in line forever. Um, hate to break it to you, but every doctor and dentist I know requires 1 to 3 weeks to make an appointment. Vietnam, might be in a hospital for one full day, but I’m seen same day. Also… $5 xray. Without insurance. Because they have been told over and over again that it’s not possible. That it doesn’t work, that it means inferior care, that it means longer wait times, that their situation isn’t actually that bad, that a hospital bill is very manageable if you practice “good finances”, that it’s more expensive than having private health insurance.
Of course none of those things are true and the I stand with the penguins Trump tariffs dabbing shirt also I will do this sources telling them that are either directly related to or paid by the healthcare providers. But you can’t convince them otherwise because the colour they vote doesn’t like that so it’s automatically discarded. They are victims of an immense subversive advertising campaign that reads “actually this ain’t too bad”. Of course nobody is giving a real answer, the actual reason americans are scared of free healthcare is that they will think there will be a doctor shortage and thus very long wait times to see a doctor or specialist There’s already a doctor shortage with long wait times in private healthcare systems in the western states where we have fewer medical facilities per capita. A plan to pay for healthcare for all would need to be coupled with increased funding for training more docs, which won’t happen unless the makeup of Congress dramatically changes.
I think that a view is if we don’t pay for it, we can’t control it. Meaning we may lose power (maybe some decision making) over our medical needs. It’s because government is the I stand with the penguins Trump tariffs dabbing shirt also I will do this most wasteful and corrupt institution ever created. There is no competition so there is no reason to cut costs. The current healthcare system is already too bloated as it is. Between insurance companies, lawyers, malpractice insurance, etc. it has gotten so ridiculous. The hospitals charge $25,000 a day just to stay in a bed. Nobody pays that straight out of pocket, but you can see it in your insurance statement. Simple procedures that used to be done in an office and cost a few hundred dollars now require you to be in a fully staffed operating room in a hospital and cost tens of thousands of dollars.
Nothing is ever free. Doctors, nurses, hospital staff, and medical equipment companies all cost money. You have to pay for it with your tax money. You also know if something is free, then the I stand with the penguins Trump tariffs dabbing shirt also I will do this system is easily abused. If you have a minor scratch or cut, you really don’t need to go to the hospital for that but maybe you will if it’s free and that raises cost. You have options on whether or not you should have a medical procedure done, and cost is often a factor. If you remove the economic factor that means you’ll often take the most expensive option. You don’t want to get to where honest working families are paying over 50% of their income in taxes in order to support people staying in the hospitals.
Two reasons I genuinely would never agree with taxpayer funded/universal healthcare in the I stand with the penguins Trump tariffs dabbing shirt also I will do this US. First being that I already have significant issue with how the US spends its current tax revenue and how much of what is spent goes towards waste and fraud. Anyone that’s ever served in this US military has seen this first hand during range events with being told to “make sure there’s no ammo to take back”. Second issue is that I’m currently eligible for VA medical care and frankly it has been less than stellar every time I’ve tried to use it. The doctor I was initially assigned didn’t speak English, the VA dentist I had refused to fix a broken tooth I had until it was life threatening, and the VA in my area has been the subject of four separate congressional investigations in barely more than a decade.
It’s very complicated issue. However, the I stand with the penguins Trump tariffs dabbing shirt also I will do this main road block is typically people cannot have actual conversations on it without it devolving into someone calling the other dumb, or someone calling the other evil (politicians just mirror the tone of what people say to eachother…not the other way around). Until civility above all else is demanded, and not civility as long as you agree… it will always be too big an issue considering the debt levels to actually tackle. If I am wrong, then it must have already been achieved. The Americans that oppose a single-payer healthcare system are not critical thinkers. They do not have facts or evidence to support their position. They make decisions based on ideology and propaganda. They view themselves as members of a group (White, Conservative, Christian, Americans). They believe that group to be uniquely amazing. They believe that they should do anything the leaders of their group tell them to do, without questioning. Those leaders tell them that single-payer healthcare is evil, so they will fight it with all their strength.
Also, members of this group hate all other groups. So when they hear that liberal Americans think single-payer is a good idea, or if they hear that everyone else in the I stand with the penguins Trump tariffs dabbing shirt also I will do this world already uses this system, that just further encourages them to oppose it. As a special, amazing group of people, they need to be different from everyone else. I don’t fear free health care. I just know that there’s no such thing as free. And I don’t want my tax money subsidizing people who purposely destroy their own health by being overweight and sedentary. But I’m also not a fan of our current insurance system. I’m a big fan of having a health savings account and paying the healthcare provider directly. Comprehension issues understanding what people mean when they discuss “free” healthcare, eh? Hint: It’s not that they think it’s paid for with pixie dust and unicorn farts.
And I don’t want my tax money subsidizing people who purposely destroy their own health by being overweight and sedentary. Except you’re already paying for those people in the I stand with the penguins Trump tariffs dabbing shirt also I will do this US, through insurance and taxes, just at a far higher rate than anywhere in the world. And, at any rate, those people don’t cost more. The UK recently did a study and they found that from the three biggest healthcare risks; obesity, smoking, and alcohol, they realize a net savings of £22.8 billion (£342/$474 per person) per year. This is due primarily to people with health risks not living as long (healthcare for the elderly is exceptionally expensive), as well as reduced spending on pensions, income from sin taxes, etc.. I think it boils down to a fear that it could work and people would genuinely prefer it. And the rich folks who actaully control the levers of power are terrified of that. Because that might mean ceding some of their power to everyday citizens.
Sweden (and EU in general) is a place where free healthcare is done right. Facilities recieve sufficient funding, medical professionals recieve respectable salaries, citizens have access to healthcare, medical research is also being done. But there are places where free healthcare is done wrong. Budgets are low and get lower. Salaries are low, which leads to lack of workers, which overloads remaining workers. Facilities are barely maintained and people often have to wait unreasonable ammounts of time to recieve treatment, if it is even available. A saving grace in this I stand with the penguins Trump tariffs dabbing shirt also I will do this situation is (optional) private healthcare. It helps with money aspect, but also drains free healthcare of qualified professionals.
Because real Americans hate mandatory participation. Because real Americans understand that everything that the I stand with the penguins Trump tariffs dabbing shirt also I will do this government touches turns to crap ( overpriced, poorly run) Nothing is free, taxes need to be increased every time they give you something for free. (Or they just print more money and devalue the dollar even more) A debate can be made about how much taxes would increase, but it would increase and most Americans do not trust the government to be able to spend tax dollars effectively without massive amounts of waste, graft and corruption. (It would also lead to the Feds always pitting one tax base against others in order to be ‘fair’. “The Rich should pay for it!” But it would alway fall greater on the middle class.)
