My advice, fwiw, Hold your head high and go. Put on the I Read Banned Books Stars Lover Books T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this biggest fake smile you’ve ever mustered and lie and tell everyone that it was great working with them and you hope you will have an opportunity to work with them again. Be professional all the way to your next job and just don’t look back. You lose nothing by going, you already won because you are moving on and escaping, but you have everything to lose by not going. You never know when you’ll run into someone from there in the future in a professional sense and you don’t want to provide them any ammo to besmirch your reputation. It happens all the time, I get an experienced resume across my desk and I see “xyz corperation” in the work history and I say hey Tom from the VDI team worked at XYZ Corp I think. “Hey Tom do you remember working_sa from XYZ Corp? He applied, should we interview him?” Tom says “who? Wait working_sa? Oh hell no that guy was a douche, he didn’t even come to his farewell party we took the time to put together for him. I don’t want to work with him again!”

Never say no to a lunch that someone else is paying for. Boss wants to do something nice for you let him. Don’t potentially burn the I Read Banned Books Stars Lover Books T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this bridge by saying no. I don’t think you’d be wrong if you didn’t feel like going but hey, a free lunch is a free lunch, and if you’re leaving anyway who cares if those jerks don’t show up? The boss is doing something nice so take it and move on IMO. I had 3 out of 12 people show up to my farewell lunch – and I was only going remote (not leaving the company). It only bothers you as much as you let it. I had a farewell party planned for me – two showed up. It still stings. I thought people liked me. I was leaving the job for family reasons, nothing malicious. If you aren’t comfortable going (if you’re asking this question on reddit I assume you aren’t) then don’t go. There is no rule book saying you have to. It is as simple as telling your boss you simply aren’t comfortable with it. There is no need to explain why. All these folks in here telling you that you’re hurting your future by not going are taking things a bit overboard (and some of them are probably the type that have made you uncomfortable at your soon to be old job). Some workplaces are toxic because there are toxic people there that make it such, and that isn’t your problem to sort out. You work there as long as you have to, then you move on. Overthinking this just stresses you out. You owe none of these people your time or presence. Ask for the company to expense a sandwich or salad or whatever from the local spot people like for that, delivered to the office. You leave having filled some bellies and also on the moral high ground.
