The warrant needs to be signed by a magistrate and must state clearly what they are searching for etc they can’t come with a document that doesn’t state what they are searching for and you are within in your rights to ask them on what grounds they are searching. Some police try to get a search warrant for a fishing exercise but that’s illegal. The fishing warrant wouldn’t be issued by a respectable magistrate, a fishing warrant wouldn’t state what they are searching for or if it does it would be a broad warrant they use them to search for anything to charge you with. But in order to get a warrant they have to have good grounds and have to convince a magistrate to sign it. It also may be signed by someone like a sergeant or inspector as well. But they have to apply to a magistrate for one, officers got to there superior explain what they need one for them the superior with say yes or no if they can go to a magistrate to get one then they have to explain what it’s for them the magistrate will decide if the warrant is legal or not and if to issue it, if it’s isn’t then the magistrate will tell them to go back and get it sorted and they they may or may not issue it if it’s within the law.

The warrant being left is a requirement. Glos Police investigating someone in Glasgow doesn’t mean anything sinister. They could have a drug dealer on their patch with financial links to what is presumably a former occupant of your address. That’s a proceeds of crime warrant so whoever they were looking for is being investigated for money laundering. If it’s a former occupant with financial links to your address I would recommend checking your own credit reports and potentially filing something with Experian if you believe they are still using your address in any way. A search warrant usually consists of a single page which is duplicated three times, with applicant’s copy, householder’s copy and court copy at the top. Not only did the officers leave behind one of their personal warrant cards, but they appear to have left the wrong copy of the warrant at the premises – the applicants copy. They may even have left all three copies of the warrant at the address. Once entry is gained to a premises under a warrant, the warrant has been executed and needs to be noted as such on all three copies with the time and date that this took place, to prevent it being used multiple times. This is another thing which does not appear to have been done.

The Home Office and therefore the Police only cover England and Wales, Police Scotland would have attended, plus that isn’t even a warrant card, just the cover, the warrant card would have the officer’s personal details on it. From the document it seems legit especially with the stamp, however, really there should be a case name and number somewhere. You’d need to quote that when speaking to the court otherwise they’ll have no clue what you’re on about. Edit to add: even though Bristol isn’t your local court, it’s likely that the address is in some way linked to their case. Doubt you’ll be able to get much detail from the court but they should confirm if it’s legit.
