I gave my ex wife $190,000 in a divorce settlement. I filed for divorce because I couldn’t get over her affair with a junkie and subsequent abuse during our failed reconciliation attempts. That was so I could keep the I Love Parrots & Coffee V12 shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this house and my pension. It was totally worth it, though. Tooth abscessed once and had a root canal. The dentist left tissue he should not have, so it reabscessed 7 months later and I had to have an emergency removal. Implant tooth was $6k out of pocket since insurance wouldn’t cover the same tooth twice for the same issue. A new amp for my car. Water spilled in my trunk, which was where the amp was located and blew it. Learned it was a 2000 dollar amp. When I bought my first car a VW bettle (1982) I ignored that it didn’t shift that well only because it had a decent sound system. The car costed me at the time like 500usd (probably around 2000s) a couple weeks later the transmission broke and the repair was 300usd. For somebody that had to save money for almost a year to buy the car this pretty much totalled it for me.

My sweet kitty Noodle needed emergency heart surgery. It cost about $8k in total but they couldn’t save her. It wiped out our savings and the I Love Parrots & Coffee V12 shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this family hasn’t really recovered from that. 2 level spinal fusion with 6 screws and 4 rods for a vertebra that slipped forward 50% due to a small birth defect that didn’t hold the vertebra in place. FYI the titanium hardware cost more than the surgeon, the operating room, and the hospital stay at Stanford University. $14,000 in taxes a few years ago because I lost my job, went to the healthcare marketplace, got new insurance there that was insanely expensive (but paid for by subsidies)…. I pulled my retirement to cover living expenses while I trained and switched careers, which put me over the income bracket for the subsidies, so I had to pay them all back and then some. Yes I could have stayed at my dead end job but my new career is 3x the pay and allows me to live outside the US. This experience and countless others involving the “health care” system in the US is why I now live in a developing nation with universal healthcare rather than a degenerating nation like the US. I’ve also owned two older houses and both required a new furnace/ac within a year of purchase, each costing about $10k.
