To release, push the button to release some of the tension and allow you to lower the handle again. This isn’t correct and the button does nothing to the handbrake cable tension. It just releases the pawl to disengage the ratchet. I don’t use the button. That way, I know how many clicks I’ve done. I tend to use fewer clicks when on flat ground 😀 You should apply the brake fully no matter where you are. Cars get hit with no driver in them all the time, imagine it getting hit and then heading towards a family member. The ratchet in the handbrake will wear out, but I’ve seen motors that have done over 150k miles and it never replaced, I guess it depends on the quality. I do, if you hold the button in there is a tiny possibility that the handbrake lowers ever so slightly just as you release the button, stopping the ratchet from fully engaging, meaning the tension on the cable will be pulling on just the tip of the tooth, as the cable cools and shortened maybe increasing tension slightly it could cause the tooth to fail, probably just dropping to the next tooth but enough for the car to till down the road and kill a load of kids. You are going to stretch you handbrake cable doing that. Next time you apply your handbrake, don’t press the button and count the clicks, on most cars you should only get about three. Much more then that and the cable is stretched and needs adjusting. The best people engage the button to stop the clicking noise up until it’s 2 clicks off the highest position. Then release the button for the top 2 clicks so you can be sure it’s properly engaged. Only the best people do this.

Not pressing the button won’t stretch the cable. Over-applying does that, which you’re more likely to do if you press the button. I use the button out of habit, but I’m quite sure you don’t need to and your not damaging anything if you don’t. It’s a ratchet, it’s designed to work that way. Ha ha. We have a Honda F-RV with three seats across the middle and a handbrake which sticks out of the dash. It won’t engage if you press the button. The button is just for letting it out again. So it’s click click click for me every time 🙂 I didn’t use the button which is designed solely to release the brake not to allow you to move the lever quietly. This was what my car manual and my driving instructors said. I am so glad I don’t have a car with a manual handbrake any more. Miserable things that have no benefit whatsoever. Its not that it will wear out the brakes, but strech the handbrake cable. With a rachet you can lever more force. Press, raise and release = less unnessasey force. Press button always. It’s an annoying sound. And I don’t worry about how much its applied, just pull handbrake as far as it goes (within reason) i’d rather it be extra stopped, than not stopped enough.
