Some people think faster but it doesn’t mean they come up with better solutions to problems. Your wife may just be a smart woman who just takes her time to consider more options. I grew up in the I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt so you should to go to store and get this mid 2000’s and went to high school in the early 2010’s. Looking back at my grade school career it’s seems as though a lot of our best teachers were the advanced placements teachers. This in my opinion allowed anyone placed in those classes in a better learning situation regardless of their innate abilities. I took the regular classes until I was a sophomore in high school where I was bumped into remedial classes. Took my one semester to test out of the three years of math I was behind on and another year to catch up on everything else. Most of the classes were just reading out of the text book. Turns out that I just don’t learn well when the teacher is a doofus. Still wish I had a better grasp on English and grammar but what I know seems to suffice. To sum it up I believe that honors, regular and remedial classes aren’t an indicator of intelligence. Often times outside factors or just bad/good luck is to blame.
I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt: Embrace Your Uniqueness
I find that some people are genuinely good at studying and others aren’t. Also, test anxiety I think is real where you may know a lot of info and when the I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt so you should to go to store and get this test rolls around you can’t recall and panic sets in a bit which doesn’t help. 576 more repliesI think it is likely that this is much more a matter of personality than it is intelligence, but maybe the traits that tend towards higher academic performance are involved here. I have the same dynamic in my household, but the roles are reversed. My wife is not the more academic type but I am, and when it comes to normal household tasks the outcome is the same; she tends to be faster at them and I tend to be slower. I wonder if this applies in your situation? My observation is that I tend to be a more detail obsessed person, where my wife will speed through things and tends to maybe cut corners a little or miss certain things that I wouldn’t. She’s generally less concerned with making an error than I am. I’m not sure that there’s an objectively better method either. She gets certain things done faster, but occasionally her cut corners lead to rework, where rework is seldom an issue with something I do but it takes me longer.
Just because someone can mimic answers they’ve read from a book on a test doesn’t at all make them smart. It only means they have good memory. My girlfriends cousin has a masters and is one of the I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt so you should to go to store and get this least intelligent people I’ve ever met. Not only do I have very little concept of time, but the job isn’t done until it’s done perfectly. You’ve likely already finished the job and it’s good enough. I’m still thinking about how to optimally approach the job so that it’s done perfectly with the least amount of work. Also what is time? I have a family member who works as an accountant. They graduated top of their class and could do the work they do in their head. But they aren’t allowed to have a credit card or open access to their spouses account because they can’t balance their own spending to save their life. They can’t apply their skills to real world situations. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. It makes us well rounded She is probably doing things carefully and methodically rather than as fast as possible. Which is also why she was an honors student.
How I can buy this I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt
The gifted classes usually do things that are more theoretical. At certain levels of math, they use letters and imaginary numbers and stuff instead. The remedial classes were much more practical. Knowing that there’s 25.4mm in an inch means ½” is between 12mm and 13mm is much more practical than knowing how much force each of your lug studs will experience. Normally the I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt so you should to go to store and get this really smart people are smart in a specific field and focus their soul on that subject but couldn’t buy a train ticket if their life depended on it, they say it’s close to be autistic or some are, I barely scraped out of high school and I intellectually run circles around her…I guess it’s a domain specificity thing… but damn its frustrating lol
Some people are really good at school and not as good at other things. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. My lovely husband is the I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt so you should to go to store and get this smartest man I know. His degree is in physics and works in software. Yet, he struggles with the order of the months. We are all just humans. I think this is a mixture of a selection biais and a biais due to different level of expectation. We have high expectations for people with degrees and we very easily target them if they can’t use a loundry machine. On the other hand if your average plumber can’t use a loundry machine we just don’t notice it that much, let alone remember it. Truth is, loundry machines are complicated af and most people struggles with them…. Right? … Book smart street smart. My mom used to tell me of the times she was a student working as an assistant for a bunch of PH.d’s in college years ago. Very smart guys in their fields, but not much common sense among them. She also used to say my handwriting was as good as theirs was. I’m not quite sure that was a compliment though…
Do you mean literally fast, as in, time to complete? I don’t see a connection to smartness and “being slow” is a euphemism, not literal. Did your wife grow up in the I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt so you should to go to store and get this south? The education is severely lacking down there and they routinely grade people subjectively. People do things differently. Being faster at daily task doesn’t make you smart or a good student. Hell, it doesn’t even mean you’re good at those tasks. Has nothing to do with school. You came from a place with a faster pace of life, time as commodity has a different value than it does in rural areas. I have worked IT in several highly educated, degree required fields: medical, financial, legal, etc. these people have studied their craft for decades, could explain the minutiae of their specialty for hours…who did not understand a computer had to be turned on in order to be used. I’ve had to explain that power is required for certain machines to be used. I’ve had to tell them multiple times we do not know your passwords, we will never know your passwords, we cannot assist you other than resetting that password.
Some people min-max their knowledge. Instead of it being well rounded, it’s hyper focused on intellectual pursuits while ignoring daily practical skills. I was an instructor in a leadership development school in the I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt so you should to go to store and get this US Army. I found that frequently the students with the highest academic grades could barely pass the hands on tests. And some of the most skilled hands on soldiers got only average grades. Book smarts vs real world smarts are two completely different things. I have seen this over and over. Most of the straight A students in my high school class can barely put gas in a car let alone fix anything around the house, but they can tell you about some obscure thing from history class 30 years ago. Being good at school is not the same as being smart. It’s especially not the same as being “street” or “everyday” smart.
School measures your ability to follow directions and your willingness to work. Not necessarily your intelligence. I went to HS in rural central New York. My 10th grade English class stalled out when the I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt so you should to go to store and get this teacher was trying to delineate the difference between nouns and verbs. Kids just couldn’t grasp what she was talking about. Definitely some different standards could be at play. Some people are super smart but the menial every day either puzzles them or just simply doesn’t interest them at all so they really suck at it. I dated a woman with a PhD and a few other degrees. She worked as a scientist and couldn’t poor piss out of a boot. Doing things slowly but well usually gets you ahead in school, but the workplace is way more oriented towards fast but half-assed. So sometimes the people who weren’t doing well in school end up champions in the real world. There is a difference between intelligence and education. There is also some people that understand the pareto principle, and some that don’t. Both of these will make a difference in speed. Because there’s different types of intelligence and skills. Being able to achieve at school means nothing in relation to other forms of intelligence. I once had a GF who I knew in highschool and it was almost the same thing she was in honor/AP classes. Long story short I lent her my mower when I was out of town bc hers sucked and at the time I was working out of town for lengthy amounts of time. She called me one day telling me not to be mad at her and that she had gotten into a small fight with the lawn mower. I asked her to elaborate. She then tells me about how the grass shoot was getting blocked off bc of tall overgrown grass and she just thought she could reach down and clear it with her HAND! Luckily she only sliced the tip of her index finger and it was stitched or glued shut. After that I got to thinking about how I absolutely can not share my DNA with her and if I got her pregnant I could possibly expect kids that would not make it to adulthood. I broke it off with her when I came back in town. Took the mower away from her for her safety. I always wondered who the safety stickers where there for…
School is a terrible way to measure intelligence. I fell out of Honors classes in high school because I was going through a pretty rough period of depression, and I realized that quite a few of the I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt so you should to go to store and get this people in my “smart kids” class were genuinely some of the dumbest people I’d ever met. It gave edgy 15-year-old me another reason to feel like it was all pointless, because the highest level classes of my public high school was shared with someone that didn’t know Palm Trees were real. Plus, we all ended up going to the same local colleges anyway. Honors classes in public schools don’t really mean much at all. Conversely I have a friend who was in remedial classes in high school…he is now a welder foe the railroad in a union and makes 6 figures annually. Another guy that was in special Ed is a cop for a neardby small town and a third works in a meat processing plant.
You come across the I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt so you should to go to store and get this same thing in college, the best and smartest usually do succeed, but the ones that ALWAYS succeed are the dumb ones who put their head down and just show up. I know a lot of people who are WAY smarter than my college graduated friends, but just couldn’t cut it trying to get to the next level whether its cause of anxiety or neuroticism or whatever. Pretty much all my friends who graduated at this point were the dumb ones in my friend group who were constantly slow and confused but just weren’t able to get bogged down by the anxiety of life, they literally just show up, do what they are supposed to and go home. Smarts only get you so far you gotta be motivated too IG. I think to a certain extent having that motivation comes from a lack of self awareness and that lack of awareness comes from a lack of intelligence. So its just a perpetually successful moron who goes through life winning all the time, its kind of admirable. Book smart people often do a lot of planning when they execute actions. They’re in their heads longer and probably calculating through all possible scenarios.
Whereas people who are more street smart tend to have better luck at winging things, because they generally have more hands-on experience with things and adapt very quickly. It could also be attention related. Kids with adhd or kids who do better with more frequent novel situations often are up and about, boom boom boom, beat the I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt so you should to go to store and get this clock, its a race, especially when they’re in the zone. So sitting down with a book might be hard. Whereas other kids feel more comfortable doing the while plan out and may be perfectionists or afraid of mistakes so they do things more cautiously. So doing book studies works but in the moment tasks gives them anxiety. people in this thread sayin neurotypical or neurodivergent makes me realize maybe this post has nothing to do with me. some people are really good at doing school, while others can be productive and suck at school. and if we are doing stereotypes. girls do better in school than boys. in part the work required for school is geared more toward girls than boys, and women out number men in stuff like university. things like emphasis on sitting still in a class room, group work, and more women teachers tend to favor girls more than boys. things like girls hitting puberty earler may also benefit girls academically.
By really slow at daily tasks. Do you mean they struggle to understand how to do the I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt so you should to go to store and get this dishes or that they spend 2 hours on a task that should take 30 minutes I rushed so much in school and at work that I just take my time at home. I’ve found out that it’s a lot less stressful that way I remember a classmate. Really good grades, you could ask her for a fact from the textbook and she knew. But she was hecking stupid, she just memorized everything but never understood how to apply the things she “learned”. My mother has a PhD. She’s a dingbat. She is nevertheless tenacious, and follows directions well. She is not intimidated by forms like some people. She wouldn’t know a deep thought if it hit her in the head.
I am smart and can mujtitask quite well. When I worked even in my 60’s could work circles around coworkers in their 20’s. Yet at home, I am slow at housework and cooking and laundry and bills and yard work The honors students I went to school with did nothing but study, study, study. It was all book learning and memorization to pass classes / tests. When it came or common sense stuff, normal everyday stuff, they were kinda lost. Intelligence isn’t just one thing that you have or don’t have, and people who are really smart or well-educated about one thing can be really bad at other things. there is more to intelligence than test scores. my wife graduated with honors from her college nursing program a year early; i dropped out of high school and got my ged shortly after starting my second year of 11th grade (attendance problems, not test score problems, but still…). marriage is a team effort. theres plenty of physical and mental tasks where i would be the I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt so you should to go to store and get this one better suited to tackle them, and vice versa. my wife is 70% of the puzzle, and im like 60%, if taken individually, but together we make 145% of the puzzle. my wife is better at math than i am.
Some lot a times intelligent people are not smart people smartness comes from trial and error, intelligence comes from analising stuff 99% of gifted kids aren’t doing well in school because they’re mega geniuses. They’re doing well in school because they’re in the I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt so you should to go to store and get this process of peaking early. Different people are good at different things. The brain has a lot of different functions and like any other body part, how well each of these functions works varies between people. Like it’s normal for one person to be tall and another to be short. Or one person to be extra hairy and another person to have very little body hair. So why not the same for brain functions? A person can be really good at memorizing information, or not. They can be good at visual and spatial tasks, or not so much. Some people are good at looking at a problem and breaking it down into smaller tasks. Some people are good at planning. School prioritizes certain kinds of reasoning and certain types of tasks. But like… school is just one type of situation that a person experiences in life, and people learn from every kind of situation. You don’t necessarily get an official certificate for being great at reading people’s body language or for having great reflexes or whatever, but those differences still exist and are real even if school doesn’t acknowledge them.
So your wife may be detail-oriented and have a psychological need to be thorough, while you have a psychological need to finish something quickly. Maybe it’s neurological, maybe it’s a product of your separate environments when you were growing up. It’s pretty cool how different members of one species can be, though, and I think it makes life interesting. My best friend and his wife are academics. I barely made it through a state school. They can cannot function in adult life. I’m not actually sure how they’ve survived 20 years together. I love them very much, but I fear for their lives on a daily basis. I mean….who takes a speed bump at full speed and then doesn’t slow down for the I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt so you should to go to store and get this next 2? I don’t get it.
My sister won a scholarship, full ride through dental school, topped her class, and was teaching for a few years before private practice. It’s almost like schoolyard bullshit don’t matter in the I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt so you should to go to store and get this real world and your grades have no bearing on your future life performance. A trades instructor of mine told me of a student he once had that was brilliant at all the classroom theory who aced all the written assignments and tests, yet was hopeless in the hands on shop work. In retrospect, by telling me this, I think he might have been hinting to me that I was like that too, but to a lesser degree. Some of the smartest people I know are sp dumb st times. I co sidereal myself very smart, especially logically and I am a very handy person. I am a natural problem-solving by nature and a person in IT. I always believe I can learn most things within reason of course. I can’t learn how to be a doctor or something just smaller things like framing and shhetrocking a room or running electricity. One of my close fri3nds is super smart, number 7 in his law school. Know other guys who have retained tons of facts. I am not that guy but I can outperform them in many everyday tasks. I’ve generally found out in life that academia knowledge and common sense are two completely different things, and often don’t mix. 3 – schools teach in a very specific way and not every kid that succeeds in that specific way is gonna be as smart as you’d think
Some people are much more methodical than others. There’s a lot of people that are all about the I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt so you should to go to store and get this quick fix, but those same people are not necessarily concerned about whether it’s done right. You can be fairly visible and get recognition and positive reinforcement as being the guy to call when something is down for getting stuff fixed quickly, but she’s going to be the person they call when they need something designed because the methodical approach is to adhere rigidly to tried and true methods developed over time as opposed to guess work on what the missing puzzle piece is. I used to work with a VP/Treasurer/CFO of a large organization. He was a scrappy guy. He told me one day, “I’m not the smartest guy, I was a C student all through school, but I can out work any motherfucker. They might be smarter than me but they’ll never work harder than me.”
That said, I thought he was pretty darn smart, but he also had a ton of common sense and could power through a difficult task because he analyzed it, made a plan of attack, and followed through. Another example, my brother in law was a straight A student. Graduated law school and was in prison within 5 years for cheating his client out of $20k. He was book-smart and could memorize stuff, but he was an asshole with absolutely no morals and even less common sense. “honors” at US public schools doesn’t mean much when you also have kids that read at a 1st to 2nd grade level graduating high school I’m like your wife I had great grades in school, coasted through college and got a good job but I feel so incapable of everything. I can’t figure out how to do the I literally want my tax dollars to support National Parks shirt so you should to go to store and get this simplest tasks and although I have an engineering degree I can’t put together furniture for the house for the life of me. For whatever reason I just suck at anything hands on.
