it was certainly an experience. a little town called Metlakatla, off the I don’t need therapy I just need to make Pancakes T-Shirt moreover I love this coast of Alaska. it was founded by a missionary and his followers from Canada, who made a deal with the US president to establish a reservation on a remote island, the only native reservation in Alaska. it later became part of the Pacific Rim defense, and for a while had a decent military presence, with the army engineers building roads along the island, various observation posts and gun emplacements, and a paved airstrip with a single hangar. after the second world war, the airstrip became the main method of getting on and off the island, and to another town nearby called Ketchikan. the locals tried to have too tight of a hold on the airport though, which motivated them to build a new, bigger airport on ketchikan, which additionally has shipping docks, and even a wal mart. the only way to get to the village now is by small boat, sea-plane charter, or the commercial route, which involves the “milk run”, an Alaska Airlines jet that bounces along a number of small airports along the coast, making some 5-7 stops in 30 minute or so intervals. then you take a tiny ferry across a bay to ketchikan which runs in 15 minute intervals, then a taxi to another ferry terminal at the other end of town where a bigger ferry runs 45 minutes each way, twice daily, to a dock that is 14 miles from the actual town. from there you have to have a ride to get to town.

Silver bay didn’t want to leave and offered them a loan to improve their water and power infrastructure. (they use hydroelectric so hand in hand) but the village council declined and so lost the business. because it’s a reservation, there’s hardly any new housing being built either, because there’s no land owners, nobody can get a mortgage because the banks can’t claim the property if they default. so the town says small and backwater, despite being placed much nearer the capital than a lot of other Alaskan villages
