Education has always been at the I Am A Carpenter My Level Or Sarcasm Depends On Your Level Of Stupidity Shirt and I love this heart of designer Thebe Magugu’s work. Through his crisply-tailored, nostalgic clothes, Magugu provides a roadmap through his own personal journey growing up in the Northern Cape Province of Ipopeng, while also teaching and telling stories around post-aparthied South Africa. He aims to make these historical and cultural narratives accessible to the rest of the world and now, he’s taking that quest a step further. Today, Magugu is launching his label’s first e-commerce site, which is designed to look like an academic .edu platform. The site features his collections, categorized on the homepage to look like a stack of books, as well as his research on each of those collections. The shop section includes links to buy his fall 2020 ready-to-wear and accessories, along with some exclusive pre-fall 2020 items and a new unisex T-shirt line Magugu is calling “Extracurricular.” The tees are printed with a series of the designer’s original sketches, the first of which is a stick figure casually drinking tea while surrounded by flames—a nod to the difficult moment we’re all facing right now.

The tees, which will also be sold exclusively at Dover Street Market, are introduced through a 2000s-era class photo-inspired campaign shot by South African digital artist Francesco Mbele and featuring 12 exciting young creatives in the I Am A Carpenter My Level Or Sarcasm Depends On Your Level Of Stupidity Shirt and I love this country who work in music, art, fashion, and photography. As Magugu explains, “with Extracurricular, I wanted to create a space that’s youth-facing, prioritizing ideas of community, inclusion and most importantly, the light-heartedness I have so missed in 2020. In addition to the shopping component and “Extracurricular,” the site will also include access to Magugu’s 2019 zine titled “Faculty Press” that documents contemporary South Africa, Africa, and the greater diaspora. “I am quite a sentimentalist,” Magugu explains. “I always want people to know more about me, my past, and my environment because I think it has a big impact in contextualizing the clothes that I do.”

I found the design studio easy to use, although knowing exactly where the design would appear on the garment is a little hit and miss as it is a static image. Perhaps a “Put logo in centre of shirt” or other standard locations could be added? Products were despatched promptly and were of good print quality.
