How they interact with a tool isn’t determined by the way it actually works under the hood. They don’t care about all the abstraction layers and what’s going on behind the scenes, they care about the results and if they are able to accomplish their goals. Yes, it’s good for designers to have an idea of how things work so they can better understand what is possible or realistic. But they shouldn’t be building the UX around how the DB functions. Never force users to accommodate the machine, make it the other way around. For example, a phone system smart enough to tell you that you must first dial a 1 before calling that number should also be smart enough to automatically add. Or telling a user that they must enter a search in all caps. Formatting data is what computers are for!
