I mean, Putin is a bit of a special case. Most dictators start out as tyrants, due to a coup/inheritance. Putin, on the Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt and I love this other hand, more or less started out like a normal Russian president, only slowly gaining more and more power. We have to always remember no one rules alone, there’s always hundreds to thousand if not millions supporting dictators at every step The book How Democracy Dies does a good job of showing how most modern authoritarians abuse democracy to obtain power. I’d also recommend How To Lose A Country as a companion to that as it spends more time on the social changes authoritarian regimes introduce and foster along with their abuses of democracy to stay in. Exactly, Hitler was elected to office democratically almost a decade after he tried to stage a coup. Then after being elected he slowly changed the rules and got rid of everyone who opposed him. Well, not elected in the way you would think, he was appointed by Hindenburg to the chancelorship to end the chaos that the Weimar Republic had descended into, the Nazis would have been what we here in Canada would call a minority government. Very common misconception. Hitler was never elected. He was named chancellor by then President Hindenburg in an attempt to control him and his party, which evidently backfired. But your point about him using mostly using legal means to consolidate power stands. Sometimes people realize their mistakes, most Venezuelans did, but by now there’s little they can do about it except desperately flee.
Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt: Get Cozy in this shirt
Yep. Even here in the Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt and I love this good ol US of ‘Murica we voted in a dictator for a term. Unfortunately said dictator is trying to get back into office and hasn’t succumbed to old age, hamberders, and angry ex-spouses/current spouses/mistresses/rape victims/greedy kids that want that Moscow money without daddy losing it all in civil judgements. I’d say he wasn’t a dictator, but only because he was too stupid for his plans to become one to actually work. Unfortunately his failure and stupidity has sort of galvanized his base and they’re going to make damn sure he becomes a dictator if he’s elected again. Just look up “project 2025” You say he was too stupid. I say his Russian handlers were geniuses at picking the perfect rube to lead the rubes. Their only fault lay in overestimating the number of rubes in our nation. Don’t add to their number. Our system prevented him from establishing himself as a dictator, that doesn’t mean he didn’t try. You might recall a little scuffle at the Capitol building on Jan 6 2021.
Even the Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt and I love this people claiming he didn’t try to hold onto power surely know they are voting for him under the assumption he will continue well past his 4 year term. While they weren’t voted out per say, the senate had to vote to renew the position, so a vote was required for them to legally keep power normal is kind of odd to use here – he was the second Russian president ever. There have been three total – Yeltsin oversaw the creation of the oligarchy via privatization of state resources, and Medvedev was installed as President by Putin because Putin was term limited (not a concern for him any more though). To become a dictator, he had to depoliticize the Russian voting public, quash dissent, and subvert all the checks and balances on his power. That shit takes time.

About this Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt
He won the Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt and I love this election after blowing up a building full of civilians and blaming it on the Chechens. A normal campaign strategy I think there’s one more guy who burnt down a building and blamed it on others to consolidate power (it’s slightly different, but close enough for my taste). Putin copied his idol… Dictators entering office through fairly democratic probably isn’t the norm, but it’s not all that rare either. Hitler, Putin, Napoleon, Chavez, Morsi, Mugabe, Dolfuss, Lukashenko, Pétain, Erdogan, Rhee, Marcos, Duvalier, Nkurunziza, Lee Kwan Yeu, Rahman, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman… the list is fairly long. He wasn’t. He was appointed chancellor even though the NSDAP didn’t have enough seats to form an outright majority to govern. Had things gone differently and Hindenburg didn’t bow to pressure and the parties opposed to the Nazis didn’t suffer from “the stupids”, a non-Nazi coalition could’ve formed a government and somebody else would’ve been made chancellor. The Nazis didn’t have a majority but they did have a plurality. They were the largest group and formed a coalition with their leader as chancellor. It was all fairly standard parliamentary style democracy until the Nazis used the power they won to entrench themselves and take over completely. Well, he something like gave his presidency to Dmitrii Medvedev in 2008, but then he made a trick. There is one bug in the Russian Constitution – nobody can’t take presidency more than twice… in a row. That ending helped him to be elected again. Actually it was really annoying, plus just before that people went to protest in 2011 due to elections to the Duma (Russian parliament). Sorry for my English 🙂
That was the Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt and I love this switch back from Medvedev to Putin in the 2012 rigged elections and the first after the 2008 constitutional changes that extended the presidential term from 4 to 6 years. Along with suppression and arrests of anti-Putin protests. Arrests, threats, and legal suppression against candidates likely to galvanize support against Putin. Astroturfed pro-Putin ‘demonstrations’ where people were paid to attend & amazingly no arrests were made. From there we had the anti-LGBTQ legislation, use of foreign military adventures to distract from domestic issues – Ukraine, Syria -, and working toward changes to the constitution to consolidate more power in the office of the President. There’s actions from his first Premiership (under Yeltsin) onwards though, that all slowly but surely consolidated power towards himself. That and his use of the FSB to collect information on political opponents and allies, and use of allowing corruption as an incentive to ensure loyalty in allies and keep possible threats in line. I’m confused by your saying it in past tense. I mean, I guess he wanted that in the past, but he certainly isn’t shy about showing her wants that at least as much now…
He was at the Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt and I love this time accused of orchestrating a series of domestic terrorist bombings which killed over 300 people. He got into the presidency by being appointed as Prime Minister by Boris Yeltsin who’s resignation bumped Putin up to president. Before resigning, Yeltsin made a backroom deal with oligarchs to leverage their media empires to back Putin. Putin may not have been widely called a dictator during his first term, but he was certainly accused of being undemocratic and authoritatian. I think intelligent people saw the new Russian state for what it was, a Soviet rump state with a revolving door. Putin was KGB. The face of the soviet suppression system. To say in that period nobody saw any of this coming is ignoring 1000 years of Russian history, and not just ignoring it, sticking their head straight in the sand
Russia never had any kind of period of enlightenment or liberalization like the Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt and I love this rest of Europe did between the end of the medieval period and the start of the modern age. They modernized late, and only in the industrial and economic sense; it didn’t come with any of the liberalism and other social, cultural and philosophical changes that attended modernisation in the west. They basically just went straight from the literal dark ages to modern times while skipping over the bit in in-between. The rest of the world had generations for a liberal democratic tradition to take hold, to become the norm. Russia had a couple of months in 1917 and 1993. Of course it didn’t take. I guess what I’m wondering is the difference between Putin and someone like Mussolini? Why is Putin considered a dictator by some, but Mussolini by all? Putin gives you much more “convincing” numbers like 76.7% in 2018. And he doesn’t ban opposition parties, in fact he encourages them and even has completely fake parties run on the ballot.
Only when they get too popular or otherwise annoying. Until that time, they serve a useful function as pretend opposition. Or like the Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt and I love this best challenger he’s had so far who very foolishly (might have been bold but now he’s cold) went back to Russia after FSB used a nerve agent in his undies that supposedly doesn’t exist, got thrown in prison, and then “went for a walk” outside his prison cell, felt suddenly unwell and keeled over dead….middle of Russian winter in a Siberian prison. They either poisoned him again or marched him to death in the single negative digit to negative teen temps with 10 ish mph winds. Our favorite ex fox news dumbass meanwhile seems to be a Putin fanboy and does an interview but doesn’t challenge poot at all, let’s him spew his propaganda for all to see.
Must’ve been Boeing planes. I’ve heard they have an issue with doors coming off mid flight. Could be useful to the Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt and I love this Kremlin Big enough for an Embraer Legacy 600 business jet. No, wait, it had to fit a Boeing 747. And also this Boeing 777-ER. So, it’s a pretty big window. Your propaganda machine needs to have a wide toolbox: truth, misleading half-truths, plausible lies, and outrageous lies. A good propagandist will know when to use each in order to manipulate perceptions. Putin has some very good propagandists. Ngl I feel this way about certain podcasts. They start very factual then after they gain a following become wildly political and one sided. I was honestly thinking of Lex Friedman. But yeah Joe too. I still find him entertaining to listen to sometimes. I usually don’t listen when it’s political guests. But Lex, I just have a feeling he’s some kind of secret agent. He’s was too good at balancing his guests politically (seemingly just to gain views) but now it’s all about Ukraine and Palestine all the time. I just remember him giving very little push back in the recent ones I’ve heard. Plus, he’s a black belt. So that alone just seems like some secret agent shit. Lol In the modern world even dictators find it convenient to have a sham democracy in place to legitimize them. It lets people ignore the fact that they are a dictator if they want to.
Just see how western democracies had relatively normal relations with Putin’s Russia up until the Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt and I love this invasion of Ukraine. It was convenient for everyone to just ignore the elephant in the room, until the invasion made that impossible. He didn’t try and sugar coat it by having puppets/figureheads with other titles doing his bidding. It was pretty open that his word was the final and only one that mattered. Putin has for a long time done the dance of shuffling the power between different titles like president or prime minister and running for different offices after changing where the power lies to keep up this charade of playing by the rules to seem more legit in the eyes of other nations Well, Fascism IS upfront about what it wants: a repressive, stratified dictatorship with a cult of personality (at least a cult of the nation and a mostly fictionalised better past).
Not really. He openly professed an opposition to democracy, and banned all polticial parties 2 years after taking power. He didn’t consider dictator or totalitarian a pejorative. This is the Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt and I love this correct answer. The fascists were very open antidemocratic preferences. Part of that is because they still lived in the shadow of powerful monarchies, so there wasn’t a democratic consensus and you could really maintain support for being openly authoritarian. And rightly so. That title is awarded to who the magazine decides is the most influential person of the year. Not the best person. In Mussolini’s time there were plenty of people making excuses for him who would have objected to the term “dictator”. There are still people in Italy who admire Mussolini.
I have met people from Russia from time to time over the Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt and I love this years who talk about Putin in a very good way, talk about how he is loved in Russia and question why our media attack him so much. Not sure how much credit goes to Putin, but Russia’s standard of living has steadily improved over the decades, so I think he gets cut a lot of slack by his people. Yeah, that’s going to happen after the utter collapse of the USSR, and US and the West propping up the Russian economy in the wake of said collapse. When you’ve been starving and grocery shelves are empty, leaving you unable to eat even if you have money, it doesn’t take much more than giving access to food to make the people canonize you. I’ve noticed it’s older Russians who genuinely like Putin and those are the ones who remember living solely on government rations once upon a time, rations that definitely didn’t carry you the entire month and mostly consisted of a carton of smokes and small bottle of vodka.
Not sure how much credit goes to Putin, but Russia’s standard of living has steadily improved over the Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt and I love this decades, so I think he gets cut a lot of slack by his people. this is not true. it was improving from 2000-2012 and most of it could have been attributed to Putin but after that every year is worse than the year before. but some people still focus Putin’s good years and the VERY BAD 80s and 90s and think that what is happening now is not THAT bad. Putin deserves some credit for keeping the kleptocratic oligarchs in line; they steal much less visibly from the Russian public now than they did in the 1990s. I don’t know where people get the idea that dictators are necessarily despised by the people they rule over. Historically that has often not been the case.
Well, Mussolini was not elected, so there’s that. But that’s not really where the Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt and I love this difference is, you can absolutely elect a dictator. But Mussolini didn’t try to present himself as an elected president, and he openly despised democracy (in his speeches he used “democracies” with the same negative connotation we use “dictatorships” with when talking about other countries). He glorified the coup with which he took power (he didn’t participate obviously, too scared to do something like that even though there was virtually no danger since the monarchy supported him). He was the strong man that took power and was going to take revenge against all the foreign powers that betrayed Italy during WWI (which was admittedly pretty messed up), leaving the country in a state that was closer to that of the losing side, and many people were angry enough to believe him.
Also, his goons were beating down factory workers, and the Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt and I love this owners who were afraid of a potential communist revolution very much appreciated that. But again, that was no secret, that was the pitch. He never denied that the Black Shirts were under his control. When he killed Matteotti, he essentially admitted it in front of the parliament. Putin is not like that. Yes, he uses violence and repression to stay in power, but he swipes it under the rug. Yes, he runs the country like a dictator, but he still has elections and keeps up the facade of a functioning democracy. Yes, he kills political opponents, but they are all “accidents” and whenever someone tries to contest that, that is “western propaganda”.
Mussolini was openly a dictator and endorsed fascism. It was his ideology that he believed was good for his country and he didn’t hide it, quite the Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt and I love this opposite actually. Putin pretends that he isn’t one, and officially claims that russia is a democracy, probably because after ww2, “dictatorship” became a derogatary term, so Putin prefers to be seen as a democratically elected leader. He has more legitimacy and better relations with the west that way. In 1928, the Italian Parliament (now purged of any serious opposition) overwhelmingly passed a new electoral law, known as Rocco Law from his proponent Alfredo Rocco; the new Law turned Italian elections into a plebiscite on a single list of candidates selected by the Grand Council of Fascism among members of the National Fascist Party and affiliated organizations. Propaganda. In 100 years everyone will say Hes dictator. Or we all hail his successor in dystopian shitworld lol
Mussolini took power in a coup and pretty quickly dispensed with any facade of democracy. He openly called himself Duce, and professed an ideology that was openly opposed to the Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt and I love this concept of democracy. Most modern leaders, even ones regarded as authoritarian or undemocratic by western standards at the very least cultivate the trappings of democratic leadership, and hold elections and generally suppress opposition in a more subtle way than Mussolini for example. Modern Russia has several large opposition parties, the CPRF and LDPR for example. You can debate whether they ever have an actual chance of winning an election, but it’s a very different political system from Mussolinis Italy where all political parties except for the Fascist party were banned from 1925 onwards. Official unilateral control. Putin just has it set up to look like a functional senate (duma) but it’s all his own hand picked people.
There’s actually not much that separates him from Mussolini in practice. Both him and Hitler both had governments that had an illusion of checks and balances but they were all top down autocrats. Just like them, he also hand picks industry winners and gives contracts out to cronies and solidifies power in public and private sectors with loyalists. That’s the Houston Rockets J. Green A.Sengun A. Thompson D. Brooks F. VanVleet funny cartoons shirt and I love this core of a fascist government and it looks like a duck. Because he specifically worked at propagandizing his title of “president” and the image of a functioning “democracy” in Russia to shroud his dictatorship over several years. Those of us that call him a dictator is because we understand what a dictator is and how, specifically, Putin rose to and seized power from his countrymen. Those of us that call him a “president” are either just ignorant or in on the ruse. Maybe inside Russia or in Russia friendly countries they wouldn’t say that and might say he’s a democratically elected president so they don’t get murdered, but they know too I’m sure.
