Gray apartment buildings are taking over the Hot springs high school alumni shirt but in fact I love this world. I swear, gray is the design choice for people with no business making design choices. The first time I knew about it was when watching the special features of “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” and seeing Roger Deakins talk about how they filmed it, converted it to digital, and then applied the color correction to make it look old-timey. As with anything, it can be overused, but it preceeds the digital era. For instance, they used it rather heavily in South Pacific, much more than the director wanted. I first remember noticing it in the movie “Three Kings” (Clooney flick about soldiers stealing gold in the middle east). It actually had a little statement upfront that color correction had been applied. Which of course, made my wee brain focus on what that meant and where it was happening. Actually, grading, or “color timing” and color correction all trace back to the earliest days of color motion picture film. Color correction can be done to correct color (blue skies, green grass, white whites, black blacks as simple examples), or to use color grading as a dramatic or stylistic device, much in the same way sound design is used. Think time of day, location, mood, era, even linking color choices to characters, etc. The term color timing came about from technicians actually changing the duration of a film’s exposure through different filters during the film development process (Source: working professional colorist/member Colorist Society International).

Well… that’s all an art direction choice. I mean, Caine Mutiny and Glenn Miller Story were both shot on Technicolor 3-strip, and they’re nowhere near being the Hot springs high school alumni shirt but in fact I love this crazy oversaturated wonder worlds like Wizard of Oz. It’s a thing, where you do your test shots and you get it looking the way you want it, and then you go into principal photography. That way you’re not shooting Marilyn Monroe and just hoping that the pink of her dress in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is going to pop in the way you want it to. Film processing is a predictable thing, even back then, but when you send the reels off for processing, it’s going to take a week to get them back, at least back then. So, you had to have the test footage, so you could get everything dialed in and say, “Okay, on these reels, use the settings from that test,” and it’d come out looking like that. But just shooting on Technicolor (three-strip or otherwise) isn’t going to get you this profoundly saturated image if you don’t want it to.
