I would climb a 3 footed ladder with a bushel basket strapped to my chest. When full, the basket weighed about 40lbs when you got off the ladder. It was summer & it was hot & humid. The orchard owner would have gone full MAGA if it had been around then. Workers were evil people who stole his $ with their wages. Everyone who picked was just scum to him. He would bitch about everything. Drinking water where he could see you would set him off about laziness & he’s paying for picking not “picnicking.” He would critique your fruit (too green, too ripe, too peachy…) and talk at us during our 30 min lunch which was usually 20 mins. He would lecture us about how the world was becoming a terrible place where workers no longer knew their place. He provided no housing for his migrant workers. Most lived in their cars. Added to my picking chores, FIL and I put in a garden to help feed the family (we were poor that year) & we grew extra to sell. So when I wasn’t picking, I was working the garden.

We also provide large amounts of our crops to the rest of the country. Without it being harvested, some foods may end up in short supply in the coming months. It’s going to make it harder for truckers to get loads out of Florida too, which will prevent many from even bringing loads in to begin with.
