I know a guy that was an absolute genius in highschool. He aced every test given without studying and sleeping through class. Yet he only became a server at a restaurant. It’s not a bad thing but he couldn’t figure out socializing and all that. Another guy was just barely getting by in school and now he is running his own business and working on opening his 5th location. I was very brilliant growing up, however, I was diagnosed with epilepsy around 11. As I grew older I had more seizures. It’s likely I had some concussions, while I’m not saying this makes me dumb, it certainly has screwed up my brain a bit. And that’s OK! Life is full of challenges. School/academics are a skill. It is not always an indication of competency in anything aside from it. I scored in the 99th pecentile on rhe verbal portion of the SAT. I scored functionally retarded in Math. Nowadays when some one refers to me as smart, I say “just don’t ask me the answer to 2+2.” I was in both for a year they didn’t know what my issue was. Ended up finishing highschool magnet/honors though. Just about every “brilliant” person is like this. It’s pretty much reverse ADD. they focus in so much on their field of study that, and get catered to their whole lives by parents, then schools, then employers, that they don’t know where to start handling any real world practical things.

Some people are only good at a certain type of task or thinking. My ex husband was this way. Great programmer, and engineer. Legit could not figure out how to open of close a packet of diaper wipes one time…..just ripped it open and left it to dry out because he “didn’t know what to do”. He had changed diapers before! I don’t know about NY state public school standards, but I moved to New Jersey from Alabama right before the start of my junior year in highschool after my Dad got transferred with his company to their office in Morristown, NJ from Birmingham, AL. I was an okay student in Alabama but struggled mightily in New Jersey. The public school standards in NJ schools were just so much higher. The curriculum, the expectations, even the grading scale was higher. In Alabama, the grading scale was done in 10 pt increments between each letter grade. In New Jersey, schools used a 7 pt scale difference between letter grades which makes a world of difference coming from a school system that doesn’t prepare you for it.
