I have a background in ecology, I’ve taken calculus, chemistry, statistics, anthropology, archaeology, geology blah blah blah. I cannot motivate my son to learn as well as his kinder teacher can. I say this is a non-teacher, teaching is not (just) about subject matter knowledge, it’s about pedagogy, learning styles, strategies, sequence etc. And you only get better as you experience more varieties of students thru the Happy Thanksgiving Dinosaur mashup turkey shirt besides I will buy this ages. There is a difference between knowing a subject and knowing HOW to teach said subject. This why college professors are so many college professors suck at teaching. Homeschool parents tutor rather than teach. Very different skillset. Even parents whose kids go to school often end up filling in gaps (for example, cvc blending, math facts, etc.) when curriculum dictates that these things not be covered due to some fad. It’s funny, I was homeschooled and I do homeschool curricula with my son (To keep his minority language skills native-level). Yet, I have never had a good interaction of a homeschooling sub. My first year of teaching I wasn’t that good of a teacher, but the longer I taugh one grade level the better I got at it. There’s no way to have one person be the best teacher to teach all of TK through 12. Despite that, there are some homeschooling families who are doing a great job, and some who are robbing their kids of an education. I’ve noticed it takes about 2 or 3 years for a parent to realize which one they are.
