One of our special education teachers sees students with deafness and hearing loss whose families won’t learn sign language, not even a few signs. Mother died in a car crash last year. Father was a drug dealer. She would come in tired every day. Angry throwing desk. This is 3rd grade. Found out later that in Nov. 2023 he witnessed his dad murder his mom while he was in the same room! Dad ran but was apprehended in another state. He left his son with his mother’s body 5 feet away. The boy had to figure out his next steps after being abandoned. He is now in a stable home and receiving intensive counseling

When I was in college, I tutored kids after school and had a set of siblings like that. That was the first sentence he’d said in two years. I tutored both of them until the year was over. I still think about them. I looked her up on Facebook and found her. She seems okay. I probably shouldn’t send her a friend request, though. I doubt she’d remember me. I tutored her for 6 months when she was 8. However, I do still look basically the same as I did then even though it’s been 20 years. So if she did remember me, she would possibly recognize me, but I still kinda doubt it. This was me. I had one amazing teacher, Mr. Angelo Spataro, he and his wife took me under their wing and made me feel safe. Took me out to eat several times a year, telling my parents I was the good citizen of the month. Took a bunch of us kids to their cabin in the summer. For 3 years til I left elementary school, this teacher was my hero and Savior and I think of him all throughout my life, I’m 56 now.

He was shot five times.” Without giving too many details (understand that there’s backstory that explains what we were and weren’t able to do in this situation), I had a student who was kicked out of her house because she was raped. I had another student who was living with foster parents because her mother was murdered and her father was in prison for killing her. I also worked with a third grader one summer who was labeled a behavior problem during a weeklong program. All he really wanted was attention. I never asked if it was the daughter or not. I think about her quite a lot now. You never know what’s going on in these kids lives. I would have never suspected a thing if she hadn’t passed out in my classroom and then told me.
I called this mom my first year to tell her that her daughter had a zero for not finishing her homework. I told her that it absolutely was okay, that no one is owed forgiveness. She’s doing so well now, but my heart broke for her so many times.
The student whose mom told him she should have aborted him because she didn’t love him and then left him with his abusive drunk of a dad and stepmom who didn’t want him. He had health issues, and they just saw him as a burden. He is a great death metal singer who writes powerful lyrics, but he still struggles with health stuff and poverty and trusting anyone. So many. When I had him at age 15, he was already heavily involved in gangs and had tattoos all over his arms and neck to prove it. He was a bit of a behavior issue in class, but once you got to know him, he was very sweet. He mentioned to me about his dad being in jail and his mom was dead so he lived with his grandmother. It only took a quick google search to find the story and it really killed me to see how this impacted him. Other teachers would talk about what a pain he was and almost none ever knew his back story; they judged him on looks and gang affiliation. Over the course of the next couple of years, he had a couple of kids and left school (I don’t remember if he left or was kicked out). When he was 19, he was murdered. I am hoping his kids (who would be in middle school now) have broken the cycle.

I remember watching him search and search for them and then watched his face the moment he knew they weren’t coming…How he didn’t start bawling on the spot, I still am amazed at to this day. It took me everything to not sob, I knew his little heart was broken, too heavy for a four year old heart. God I still cry about him, that was my first year teaching (I’m almost at a decade). I never forgot about him.

West of Colorado seems to be where many poly families are more common.

When I was grading them, my jaw was open. 1) I couldn’t believe how honest they were and 2) I couldn’t believe how awful 50% of their upbringings were. There’s no resources for real oversight, so as long as those kids make it on the school bus every morning without open wounds the “parents” get left alone.. So many unloved, unparented kids made me passionate about sex education and healthcare access. I had teenagers being encouraged by their parents to get pregnant young so grandma would still be able to enjoy grandmaing with a younger body. And “if you are pregnant early, you’re body will bounce back faster so you can stay hot in your 20’s”
Working with those kids made me understand why Texas still hits kids. There were some children with such lack of emotional and impulse control that couldn’t be trusted around other humans without the Hail Santa 2.0 Holiday Christmas 2024 Shirt but in fact I love this fear of violence. I still am against physical punishment, but when you lack the resources to keep everyone safe, you understand and forgive it. The older kids were strangely serious and also wild, but kind.
