The museum painted a pretty harrowing and emotionally moving picture of just how horrific nuclear weapons are… but sadly it just wasn’t that black and white. Yeah, I’m wondering where all these US schools people are attending are located. We learned a lot about it in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Yeah I was glad to have learned a lot about it in school. 1000 paper cranes was required reading in my elementary even I’m not a museum guy but it was genuinely the best museum I’ve ever been to hands down. Absolutely breath taking in the best worst possible way.. The folded origami swans have been stuck in my brain ever since. Beautifully done. I lived in Nagasaki for a few months. It’s surreal seeing the city from vantage points some of the historic photos were taken from, like of Urakami Cathedral where all that stood was part of the facade. I went to the atomic bomb museum and even spoke with Hibakusha (survivors). There are no words to describe it all. War is a terrible thing. The Japanese did horrific things during that war. It doesn’t make the bomb any less horrific but it’s good to remember the actions and atrocities that led to it. That being said the bombs were targeted at a civilian populations it’s not a place they should have targeted. But war always hurts the innocent civilians more than the soldiers or the politicians no matter what side. I’m glad we haven’t had a major war since ww2. I hope we can keep it that way. Wars are impossible to end but hopefully we can at least bring the amount of them down so more civilians can live without a bomb smashing down their homes and killing their neighbors. They weren’t targeting civilians. Hiroshima was chosen because it was a big manufacturing city for Japanese weapons. Meanwhile, Nagasaki was an incredibly important port town for the Japanese Navy. Both cities were also fairly undamaged by the war so far, so the full power of the bombs would be shown. That’s why they didn’t choose Tokyo because it was already pretty much completely destroyed as it was.

As we continued walking around A bomb dome we came across a plaque. It said the bomb hit Hiroshima at 8:15 on August 6, 1945. Then it clicked why the chimes went on for so long. It was a very melancholy feeling. Humanity is lucky that we learned how fucking destructive and senseless nuclear weapons were before they reached modern effectiveness. Even though this prevented an invasion, it doesn’t mean it’s any less horrifying what happened to the Japanese people back then.
