Not looking to dump further on students, parents, school, or the Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt In addition,I will do this government. Not looking for sarcastic comments about how proposed solutions could never work, but instead genuinely interested in small and big ways that might help with this dire situation.Well more money obviously but if that’s implied that we could have more money to do whatever we wanted with I’d say, and this is only my opinion: Smaller class sizes. Gimme 10-15 kids and I’ll get 90% of them up two to three grade levels in one year (in ELA). 25 to 30 kids now and I’m using 75% of my time on classroom management instead of actually teaching. Another adult in every class whether that’s a para (or two!) or another teacher. So much easier to teach when I don’t have to constantly stop my lessons to deal with behavior issues. If I could just continue teaching while another teacher/para pulled a misbehaving kid aside or into the hallway or just sat next to them for a few minutes that would be wonderful. These are the first things I’d do but of course there are 20 other suggestions I have, these are just the ones that would help the most IMO.
Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt: buy and enjoy this shirt
I agree with other posts here, like “parents have to parent” but there’s not really anything we can do about that if we had all the Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt In addition,I will do this money in the world so I focused on something that might be possible with more money. Although having more money also seems like a pipe dream Also, letting teachers teach the way they know how to teach. Stop buying expensive curriculums that don’t allow students to actually learn how to read or do math. Also, taking student miss behavior seriously. Not allowing the students to run everything. Standing by the teachers instead of taking the parents side. Now I’m not saying that teachers and parents are enemies, but believe the teacher when they say that the student did a certain misbehavior.
As a parent, I want to generally agree with this but Sold A Story and few other things hurt teachers and the Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt In addition,I will do this education profession’s credibility. Oh, I am all for sold a story! I am all for getting back to Phonics and teaching children. the sounds! That’s exactly what I’m talking about. Balanced literacy has hurt our students. I understand where you’re coming from, but we teachers have to teach what we are told to teach. So it’s not really our credibility that’s at stake. Teachers often have no choice if the curriculum they teach and that was the case in that podcast as well. Teachers were told to teach that curriculum. It’s the same way in upper grades, in my experience. Schools or school boards adopt a curriculum, like StudySync, and teachers have to teach it. I’m not a current teacher, but I remember growing up and it being teacher always right, unfortunately when I taught in a charter school almost two decades ago, it had already transferred to the parents making excuses and blaming child and therefore teacher always wrong. Seems there needs to be a happy medium, as teachers are not always right, but patents need to learn their kids can and are a**holes at times.

Description for Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt
We are lucky to have relatively small classes (my smallest is 3 for AP physics C, and my largest is 27 for honors calculus, but they typically cap at 24 and average 16) For the Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt In addition,I will do this classes with 16, while I imagine would be a luxury for some of you, I still spend a decent amount of time on behavior management. When four of those are absent for one reason or another? Doesn’t even matter which four? Totally night and day. 12 is the sweet spot for sure I think my high school ASL class had 40 students. There weren’t even enough desks for all of the students. No wonder a couple of the students thought they could get away with vaping in the classroom… What’s funny for me is that my smallest class right now is 16, it’s by far my worst class. 12 of them don’t wanna do anything and dick around, but that could be bad luck in having a whole friend group together
Jesus, my school would never allow a class of 3 kids. If you get under 25 regardless of subject they threaten to cut it unless you get numbers up. I had 3 classes of 25 that they reduced to 2 classes of 37 this year. My subject requires the Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt In addition,I will do this personal attention of a teacher with each student for them to be successful, but it isn’t happening so I guess we just won’t learn. At the last staff meeting admin bragged that they were able to work with ratios so that some classes would be capped at “only” 34. And they removed the cap on others altogether. Every year we’re told we have to do more to grow the program and get kids to sign up more because our classes tend to have around 25 kids each which is apparently a problem.
If that group is particularly small they throw random in who completely derail the Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt In addition,I will do this experience for everyone. I have watched our district run every single director off every year for 11 years with those shenanigans. I have 180 6th graders signed up for band next year. By myself, in a room that is smaller than our weight room, ag room, or technology room. They split into 2 classes. My admin is in board hiring a 2nd director, but the school board is only offering a parapro position, meaning likely 0 actual training in the subject. Leaving me with close to 90 kids. Yes!!!! I have 17 this year in a public school and it’s a dream come true compared to the 22 that I had last year. My hardest class has 7 kids. My biggest class of 16 is my best class. Numbers don’t mean much when you have 4 chuckleheads in a class of 7. My girls are in first grade (twins) one has 15 and the other 16 in the class. One class is perfect and the other CHAOS just because of the mix of personalities (3 boys who will never be in class together again, in this district, our admin plans the classes very very carefully) those boys were me and my best friend in school…we were in 2nd grade together, and the school must’ve said “never again”…they must’ve forgotten, ’cause they slipped up and put us in the same 6th grade class if it helps, he’s now a doctor, and I went from the armed forces and into teaching, so there’s hope for some of us naughty boys
16 for me would have been heaven!!! I had over 30 in every class, and over 30% of those had letters & numbers attached (special needs of one kind or another), and no paras; no ELA help; nothing. I spent a majority of my time on classroom management. Very little time for actual teaching in circumstances like that. When I taught in China I had TA, and holy shit, having an adult handle the Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt In addition,I will do this behavior during class time was a fucking godsend. 10/10 I had a TA in a public school, and she was more work than she was a help. She would interrupt me. And I asked her to help me with behavior, and she said that it wasn’t her job. This. Having a TA is great if it’s a good TA. My current TA just yells at kids and picks fights with them. Half the time it’s not even a kid who doung anything they weren’t supposed too. I’m actually having a meeting with her and my admin next week because nothing changed when I spoke to her on my own.
Agree with all of these points. Tired of people quoting that one BS study saying “class size makes no difference” seriously? STFU with that gaslighting nonsense. Also I would add to this more support for pre-school/childcare/aftercare etc. A student in an overcrowded home without access to literacy/numeracy support needs those programs to keep up with their more privileged peers, and yet they have been cut in many of the Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt In addition,I will do this neediest places. Also, maybe this is not happening everywhere, but the “standards based report cards” with the 1- 4 rating scale is part of the problem. Students come into middle school having no idea what letter grades are. Parents have no idea that they are behind. The idea of 70% accuracy as a benchmark is completely gone in some cases, which leads to kids doing a crazy bare minimum of like, 20% then acting outraged when it isn’t enough. Build that habit over 5 years of elementary school and you have a cumulative effect that’s disastrous in middle school. Being proud of an all A/B report card can motivate students to learn more and it isn’t necessary to give out F’s at the younger grades, either. So I’d say going back to letter grades in elementary would help a lot.
I talked with the Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt In addition,I will do this real head of the state’s DOE. He said Level 3 was designed to “catch” as many students as possible. I loathe that 1-4 system. Level 3 is a big pile of mush. A student could improve performance significantly and still get a 3. There’s no motivation. You can’t say, “It’s still a 3, Bernie, but it’s a high 3.” Letter grades have 13 levels. They’re more precise, and students and parents can track progress (or decline) better. We just implemented the 1-4 system for grades 4-9, whereas it was just used for primary level previously. I loathe it. The criteria for level 4 is essentially what would’ve been considered an A+, and 3 is everything from C+ to A. I’ve gotten away so far with using terms like “bridging into level 3” and “performing strongly/confidently at level 3,” but it’s so unclear for parents. Heh. Wasn’t that “study” looking at outcomes in classes of like 50 in Pakistan and Kenya? Like sure, class size makes no difference when every kid there knows their family is paying out the ass to give them an education and they’ll get booted if they act up or flunk out. You can absolutely teach effectively to very large classes when the class is composed entirely of children who are willing to behave and learn.
More paras seem like reasonable solutions. Paras don’t need the Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt In addition,I will do this credentials that teachers do, so you don’t increase the demand for teachers I used to think this was the solution, until I was given a para who tried to give the kids answers on tests and just sat in one spot all day. She was supposed to rotate to the other content teachers in the grade level and would not, even after meetings with admin. The following year my para showed up to work maybe 2-3 days per week, no call no show. Still happened after being written up. She also kept giving kids answers on tests, exit tickets, and wrote answers for essays prompts for kids to copy. When she wasn’t giving kids answers instead of helping them come to their own answers, she was answering questions in class as if she was the student. That was all when she was awake. Yes, she slept in classrooms sitting up. It got so bad that the kids would try to wake her up and she continued to sleep. This behavior continued after multiple admin meetings. I just want a para who does their job.
I agree with what you’ve said. I get a feeling what I’m about to say may be some of the Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt In addition,I will do this 20 other suggestions. To continue your list. So, a hell of a lot more money would be great because it could help with hiring two teachers to a room. More money is really the answer, unfortunately. It just has to be spent properly. Here are some of the thingsive thought about in the past… 3. Increase teacher salary. If we got paid well. It would probably encourage others to pursue the field and make it competitive. The conditions are bad, and a serious salary bump would make it easier to swallow for many of us and, again, open the door for more hires. 4.1 To help curb learning loss and also justify the pay increase. Modify the calendar year so that students don’t have the long summer break. Break it up into some additional 2- or 3-week breaks. Let’s look at some of the calendars that other countries use and model it from that. 4.2 This would also help parents. The long summer break can make it difficult for people because they have to find childcare. We’re not supposed to be babysitters, so the modified school year would continue their education and help parents so they don’t have to take time off or drastically change their routine for the summer break. Not everyone can afford child care or have family that can watch their kids.
5. Continuing on the Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt In addition,I will do this money front, if we could get enough staff at schools (2 teachers per room) and adequate materials (desks, books, supplies etc.) we could bring schools up instead of having people going for vouchers to get into schools theyre not zoned for. Politicians talk about school choice this and that. How about we bring all the schools up so school choice isn’t sought after as much? 6. More money for everyone. We need living wages. Poverty hurts so many. If everyone had more financial stability, it would help a lot. I’m not an economist, I’m sure there’s all kinds of craziness there and how that would cause inflation or whatever. At the end of the day, if more people had food in their bellies and a roof over their head, mental health would improve and can help with behavior. Now, if a person lives beyond their means, that’s where a different problem arises. Anyway.
7. A four day school week for kids. Teachers could have their Fridays to catch up on grades and parent contacts if they need to or just have a 3 day weekend. I should just say Three day weekends for everyone. The four day work week seems to be a pretty good idea across the Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt In addition,I will do this board. This point could also be counted as 4.3 OK, sorry for going on a rant. I’m not saying it would be easy to implement everything I wrote here. But, I think they’re the things that could help us all. Not just teachers, but society My state has lots of school going to a four day week. The day has to be extended so much that for rural areas, busses on long routes will be out until almost 7:00 pm. Elementary children are showing more behaviors, and nap time is illegal here. Extra recess can’t be done because it doesn’t count as face-to-face instruction time, and it encroaches on teacher prep time. When you look at it, the four day school week is more beneficial to teachers and their own children because of the day off to make appointments. It’s being used as a teacher recruitment tool, and the kids are not seeing much benefit because of the extended day. I remember going to high school in a building without air conditioning. If the dress code is May and September was anything to go by, year round school would have just had swimming suits and axe body spray as summer attire.
At my site we have small class sizes. It works. I can have conservations with each one of them to see what they have learned. I strongly agree. When my district opened in the Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt In addition,I will do this September after Covid started, classes were split into a morning or afternoon session, with about 12 kids in each. The children were so much calmer and got a lot of individual attention. Another teacher would mean that sick and vacation days would be less disruptive since they would effectively be in charge while the sub is the second pair of hands and eyes. My school got a grant for added co-teachers right after Covid. Having another person in the classroom to help divide and conquer classes, especially needy ones, has been absolutely wonderful.
This is my number one too, and miles above any further suggestions. It is just too many bodies in a room to accomplish anything real, the Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt In addition,I will do this conversation is pointless because nothing else can be effective with a 1:30 ratio. It just can’t. And any other positive changes that happen in the early years will be erased when the chaos of 1:30 comes into play. Everyone’s cortisol is always at a peak and no one can thrive in those conditions. I personally think volunteers are great. We have a parent volunteer at my placement and it’s awesome when she can come in. We had the PTA ask for parent volunteers. But since it is volunteering, people would regularly no-show or cancel last minute for assignments. So now the teacher is scrambling. There is no consistency, and things are forced to change last minute. It actually makes it worse. You’d like to think people would show up, but this has blown up so much in our faces. This entirely, I’ve got 31 students in one class that are “better” behavior wise but a significant part of my time is spent on classroom management while in my 21 student class with students that have more behavior issues I actually am able to get more done academically. Smaller class sizes create the best learning environment and 10-15 is the perfect class size imo.
That allows for proper application of different academic levels for kids that need to be brought up to level, kids that are at level, and kids that are beyond and way beyond. Having all of those abilities together in a class is hell The earliest intervention—At the Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt In addition,I will do this hospital, gift new mothers with tools and knowledge of how to raise readers. I’m thinking not only books, but quick instruction sheets for songs and games to play during early development. Maybe even something like a yearly subscription box for birth through 5 years. Public service announcements about the neurological effects of screen time on young children—if we can do it for other vices, we can do it for this. Community-based parenting classes. Teach people how to set limits and encourage independence in their children.
Better funding for community centers in general—give families and teens things to do and places to go that don’t cost an arm and a leg. Smaller class sizes and additional paraprofessional support in every classroom—and pay paras better. It should be a job that is a step above working back of house at a restaurant and offer full time hours and benefits. All of these things cost money, of course. However, they also create jobs, and I think it would be worth it to exchange some defense budget to have an educated populace. If theres a way to know..like red flags that a child will struggle to learn how to read, guidance for parents with that as well. My local health department sends out mailers to parents every few months up to age 2, then every 6 months to age 5. They talk about health and development at each age and how important it is to talk to, play with, and set boundaries with kids. As well as the Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt In addition,I will do this importance of reading to them, getting physical activity, and limiting screens. My Pediatrician’s office sees a lot of low income/Medicaid patients and they give an age-appropriate book to every kid at each of their checkups. Just a quick comment with a suggestion about your first point, all new parents instead of all new mothers would more appropriate here I think. Some children have two fathers for example, or if there are two parents of opposite genders both should have information on raising readers (and children in general). I would actually go several steps further and have NO technology for students outside of a dedicated IT/tech lesson. No chrome books, no tablets, nothing. Pen and paper should be the standard for lessons and students should be expected to learn how to take notes/complete written work to a good standard. Even things which are standard like calculators should only be used after students have demonstrated basic competency with maths operations.
Then when you do introduce technology, make sure it’s desktop PCs first so that they actually learn how to do basic things like saving a file and then finding it again or typing without being glacially slow. I’d also add to this bringing back memorizing things. Things like times tables, basic poems or songs, dates and places of prominent historical events and the Grinch Hand Love OKC Thunder Christmas Shirt In addition,I will do this like are key to their subject area and if you don’t know them then you’re likely to struggle with more complex things. Exactly. We were not allowed to use calculators aside from the very few lessons until I was in algebra two. So all through elementary and middle school, we only use calculators a handful of times. I don’t think any of our primary school maths classes used calculators more than an absolute handful of times and that was more towards year 5-6 (so ages 9-11). Before that it wasn’t a thing.
