Probably my teen daughter’s cancer in 2018. The insurance was billed 250k for her diagnosis, which consisted of 2 MRI’s, a PET scan, a skin punch biopsy, and 3 rounds of bone marrow biopsy attempts in which they took 14 bone marrow samples to try to find what was wrong and why her bone marrow was all simply dying. Then her treatment was a total of 122 days inpatient over the Greeta so you should to go to store and get this course of 6 months. The total billed to the insurance for the entire course of her diagnosis and treatment was 1.8 million dollars. We only paid 5k of that out of pocket total, which is fantastic. But then there’s also the rest of the costs. I declined to renew my part time work contract (to be fair, I was seriously considering doing this anyway) and moved into the hospital with her, so loss of income. My husband and sons ate out a lot more, because no one had time to cook much of anything. Since I was only working part time, that had been my responsibility, and I was suddenly gone. All of the miscellaneous medical equipment like a wheelchair, etc. Gas and wear/tear on the car with 30 minutes of travel each way to her treating hospital, and we were lucky it was so close and has free parking. But we were making that trip at least twice weekly during the 2 months they were trying to diagnose her, and then trips for her dad and brothers to come visit while she was hospitalized.

Anti-depressants and sleep aids as needed. Follow up visits with her oncologist, starting once per month at the beginning, and getting further apart as time goes on, to check for relapse – which is probably always going to be there at the back of our minds. A yearly echocardiogram, because some of her chemo drugs were cardiotoxic, and late effects can show up decades later. Chemo destroyed her hip joint, so a year of working with the orthopedic surgeon to try to avoid surgery, and then having to do the surgery anyway – she got a total hip replacement last year at the ripe old age of 19. Even things like needing to go in to the doctor for blood tests because a cold lasted longer than expected, and it’s *probably* nothing, but that’s also how a relapse could present. So we check, because it’s the only way to sleep at night.
