I always get the Goodbye 8Th Grade On My Way To Be Class Of 2028 Graduate 8Th T-Shirt besides I will buy this “how can my kid raise their grade?” Email. Well, it would help if they did the work and submitted it, for starters! Unfortunately in a project based class I don’t really have much else to go off of I’m just surprised you get parent emails at all! I find the apathy both with students and parents. The one year I taught at a middle school I don’t think I ever had a parent respond to any emails I sent out. Why would the students care when the parents obviously don’t because it’s “just” art? :/ Unfortunately the elective teachers get the “this is my fun period so I can fuck off” vibes from the students after they struggle to achieve grade level competency in Ela/math If it makes you feel any better, they are fucking off in all of their classes, not just electives. They absolutely do not give one small fuck about anything related to an education.

Goodbye 8Th Grade On My Way To Be Class Of 2028 Graduate 8Th T-Shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater, long sleeve tee

Middle school math here, and yep. The kids just do not care about doing well. If they don’t have a sport to become ineligible in, they don’t turn in anything. Sub, but I was co-teaching in 8th grade LA and they can’t even be arsed to pretend to read their books or stop talking. The principal talked with them just before a break we had and they don’t care. I have subbed k-8 for over 10 years and I have hit the Goodbye 8Th Grade On My Way To Be Class Of 2028 Graduate 8Th T-Shirt besides I will buy this point that for my mental health I need to step away from the big kids as soon as they can find someone to cover my specific position and go to subbing only with elementary 5th grade math here. It’s the same. 0 fucks given. I’m looking to switch to an elective cause the 0 effort towards math has me banging my head against the wall. It looks like I’ll see the same as an elective teacher but at least I won’t have to do re-tests for math anymore
Middle school music teacher, can confirm. Bunch of kids sign up for the Goodbye 8Th Grade On My Way To Be Class Of 2028 Graduate 8Th T-Shirt besides I will buy this class thinking that it’s easy based on what they did in elementary school, then they complain because I make them play every day It’s not just the kids that think it’s only a fun period with no “real work.” I taught MS band for several years and there were regularly math and ELA teachers who would hold students out of my class if they were behind on work. It was infuriating – band is a collaborative class and when a part is missing everyone suffers! Plus they also got a grade for my class, too! It got so bad with one math teacher I had to have my principal intervene, and that teacher gave the stink eye every time she saw me for YEARS until she left, even after I transferred into the library media specialist position.

I wish I had words of wisdom for you but I’m going through the Goodbye 8Th Grade On My Way To Be Class Of 2028 Graduate 8Th T-Shirt besides I will buy this same motions right now with my fifth graders. None of these kids seem to care about anything if it’s not a TikTok video or a video game. At least you’re not alone? At the beginning of the year I gave NO creative choice; they had to replicate art EXACTLY as presented and their grade was blindly graded by the class. I present the art with no name, the students give a grade based on the rubric. They were BRUTAL in their grading and that somehow magically fixed their apathy. They couldn’t blame me for their grade and they knew their peers were going to be tough on them so they actually started working hard. Now, six months later I’m getting a level of work I’ve never seen before. 18 years in and this year that started as a living hell is somehow producing work I couldn’t have imagined. This is really cool and I’m really impressed you created a safe environment for this kind of student accountability in your class!
That’s awesome! And it’s realistic. My best improvement as an artist came as an undergrad when we did critique days. My classmates tore my work to pieces and I had to deal with it and get better. The only difference is, I had to present my piece, shitty or not, name and face attached. I get why you remove the Goodbye 8Th Grade On My Way To Be Class Of 2028 Graduate 8Th T-Shirt besides I will buy this names and I would do the same. I do gallery walls and have kids grade each other (it’s not their final grade). The kids just go “it’s nice. I Iike it. It’s stupid” like y’all I taught you more words. The first few rounds I asked for no extended, student provided feedback; they had to use check boxes on a detailed rubric to calculate a grade. The final grade given for the assignment was the averaged grade based on the rubric. They were brutal in the rubrics, and the grades reflected the level of work turned in. After a few rounds I gave sentence starters and heavily modeled the feedback. Since they had a place to start from, and were already familiar with the detailed rubrics, this step went quickly.
After that they were very familiar with what was expected of them feedback wise. They understood the Goodbye 8Th Grade On My Way To Be Class Of 2028 Graduate 8Th T-Shirt besides I will buy this rubric both from using it to grade others and from getting a grade themselves. The sentence starters removed the “it’s nice” nonsense. Now they receive a grade for their artwork AND the quality of their feedback. They roast each other masterfully based on the requirements of the assignment and it’s beautiful. I honestly started this out of desperation. I was so burned out from the apathy and lack of motivation that I just basically handed over the reigns to the kids and they ended up loving it. This is really cool and I’d love to implement something like this in an advanced middle school art class. But how do you deal with students who are special Ed? Do they still participate? There are some special education students who can produce wildly awesome art, but others who try their best and don’t get past scribbled looking art. How would you handle peer-grading in that case?
Except that is going to be illegal in most places. Glad you are getting good results, but if a parent around me found out that students were giving each other grades, stuff would hit the Goodbye 8Th Grade On My Way To Be Class Of 2028 Graduate 8Th T-Shirt besides I will buy this fan. Student led learning and peer feedback are a pretty big component of current teaching in my area. I’m sorry you’re not allowed to implement them. HS English, I gave my remedial 11th graders the option to write a very short essay or draw a creative infographic for their semester final in December, only 5 turned it in, 3 of them wrote “I don’t want to do this” and then drew pictures of clowns :/ My students all gripe about their art teacher/class too. Like bro draw your pictures and stfu lol. I tell them, not everything is this hill you need to die on.
HS Art-I have the Goodbye 8Th Grade On My Way To Be Class Of 2028 Graduate 8Th T-Shirt besides I will buy this same exact problem. Even the creative kids half ass the projects I expect them to soar at. Everyone destroys the materials and then complains that their brushes are crusty and the rulers are all bent or broken. I could give them the most exciting project ever, tailored perfectly for each kid, and they’d push it off and not work on it. One of the most frustrating parts of the job I feel like “one of the most frustrating parts of the job” is a huge understatement. Outside of building relationships and interacting with the students, the job is all about planning for learning, nurturing new skills, building a love for lifelong learning, seeing them have lightbulb moments, etc. We might be able to still build relationships with them if we want to talk to them about tiktok, but their complete inability to give AF about their own education overrides everything else.
I’ve honestly never had a group of students more resistant to doodling and coloring. This used to be the Goodbye 8Th Grade On My Way To Be Class Of 2028 Graduate 8Th T-Shirt besides I will buy this fun part of English assignments but now it’s just extra work and effort. I told a kid last week, if he turned a map in like that again I’d use his terrible work for fire starter. I may work with kids with learning disabilities, but that doesn’t mean they can’t color inside the lines or know the difference between land and water on a map. I’ve had students who had accommodations for fine motor skills, this kid is not that student. This kid was lazy and thought it didn’t matter. He rushed through it to get it done and then had to re-do it or take the F. Foreign language teacher and same! A lot of the projects I do have some creative component and they hate it. Very disturbing. They don’t do anything small motor off the tablet. They color online. Therefore, they have no muscle memory for the writing and coloring motions we had. Then they get frustrated because they could just color a Matisse in five minutes online. They need to understand that comfort with using a writing instrument will be a gift to themselves. But they won’t. So they’ll be klutzes, too.
YES. I just had my 8th graders make a poster showcasing 5 kitchen tools. I told them “make it look pretty, and color it.” My God they tried everything in the Goodbye 8Th Grade On My Way To Be Class Of 2028 Graduate 8Th T-Shirt besides I will buy this world to get out of it. Just make the spoon red for all I care. Sheesh. Foreign language and same. I have kids who argue with me over pencils. Pencils! Apparently, it’s too much for my 9th graders to bring paper and pencils to class. I’ve given over 200 pencils this year and said no more. So now they argue with me about how I should give them the pencil they see on my desk. They challenge boundaries and don’t care one iota about learning. It’s all very disheartening. They chose the elective! If they got anyone to blame, blame themselves! They chose to do this class. They think it’ll be an easy “a.” Fail them. Oh well. Not all middle schools have electives the students can choose. Where I work we have art, music, technology and PE, and all students have to participate in all of them no matter what.
I have the Goodbye 8Th Grade On My Way To Be Class Of 2028 Graduate 8Th T-Shirt besides I will buy this same struggle. I really have to hype up my students constantly to get them going and it’s draining. I’m also that teacher who constantly makes them go back and add more details or make changes to their work and they don’t love it. I started displaying their art more in the hallway whether it’s good or not and doing more class critiques. They also all must choose and display one thing in our semester art show. Middle schoolers don’t want to look bad in front of their peers, so it’s a great motivator. So true. I’ve had middle schoolers tell me they don’t need to do their work because “it’s just art, my parents don’t care if I fail.” as with everything else, it starts at home Yup. How horrendous that AI is being used to create the things that are supposed to be reflections of our humanity. I hate AI images.
I hear you, I have the Goodbye 8Th Grade On My Way To Be Class Of 2028 Graduate 8Th T-Shirt besides I will buy this same level. They don’t mind turning in trash drawings that depict as little as possible and act offended if you push them to try more. They expect an A for hardly any effort. It just sucks and nothing seems to please them. Not much desire or creativity. Those that do try and are eager to learn are my jewels! As a 7th grade Science teacher, it isn’t any better in the “core” classes either. Kids have been pushed along for so long, they know they don’t have to do anything anymore because even if you try and hold a kid accountable/back, admin will bend over backwards to the parents when they come in and complain. It’s not just you my friend. I teach 7-8th grade science and the fun, exciting labs I plan are all met with the same apathy. Squid and shark dissection? Ehh. Lunar cycle with Oreos? Ehh. Design your own coke and mentos? Ehh. Make your own balloon powered car? Who cares? It’s sucking me dry. I hate the apathy. Why bother making things fun and engaging when it’s met with the same response as lectures and notebook activities. Solidarity friend. Maybe one day it will change
See, I was never a science-y kid, but I LOVED the Goodbye 8Th Grade On My Way To Be Class Of 2028 Graduate 8Th T-Shirt besides I will buy this labs. I still remember in 6th grade when we had to build our own mini sailboats out of styrofoam & cardboard and then race them by blowing on them to power the sails. Everyone got so into it! I wonder if it would be like that today. From teaching ms art for a bit now I have found a few strategies that seem to work. First is I am a hard grader for an art teacher, I give student daily stupid grades that make up 50% of their entire grade. I also document when they don’t complete any work in my grade book to cover my ass. The second thing is, I tend to try to meet them half way…most of the time students struggle to get started because art can be so intimidating. Most middle schoolers think that you are born able to draw.
Middle school Social Studies here and they do the Goodbye 8Th Grade On My Way To Be Class Of 2028 Graduate 8Th T-Shirt besides I will buy this same thing in my class. I have projects that incorporate art thinking that it will be a fun activity for them and they complain the whole time. Then when they do other work they always complain that I don’t give them any fun activities. Like I get theyare atthat age where they’re starting to be disenchanted by school but it’s a give and take relationship here. I’ve even specifically asked them what’s something they enjoy that I can incorporate in and they still don’t participate. I was highly successful as a Flame Artist, renowned for my work with clients in commercials and other media projects. I’ve collaborated with top-tier companies, worked on video games, created music videos for celebrities, and contributed to children’s animation. Currently, I’m featured in a Netflix documentary about Kanye West. Additionally, I’ve invested in creative arts initiatives in underprivileged areas of Latin America. Returning to NYC, I’m now giving back to my community as an art teacher, a role deeply rooted in my personal journey. Growing up in the South Bronx during the crack and AIDS epidemic, art was my salvation. However, I’m facing culture shock witnessing the lack of motivation among today’s youth. Despite my extensive experiences, including working at Rockstar Games, initial admiration from middle schoolers wanes quickly. Many students seem disengaged, preferring distractions like social media trends over their assignments. It’s disheartening to witness their lack of drive, especially after showcasing augmented reality creations inspired by my own Photoshop projects. Despite providing detailed tutorials, a majority of them fail to follow through. This attitude frustrates me immensely. I understand the value of hard work and sacrifice, having entered the industry when software and hardware costs were exorbitant, and learning resources were scarce. In contrast, today’s students have access to free software yet fail to appreciate the opportunities before them. I’m reminded of the hunger for education in other countries, where students strive for knowledge despite limited resources. As a teacher who has overcome adversity and achieved success, I expected more curiosity and drive from my students. It’s disappointing to see them squander their potential, lacking the curiosity to explore and learn from someone who shares their background and has achieved their dreams.
Bummer… and to know that there are so many opportunities in the Goodbye 8Th Grade On My Way To Be Class Of 2028 Graduate 8Th T-Shirt besides I will buy this city to do so much. Have you tried to connect with the access program? Those are programs for neurodiverse youth and almost all cultural organizations have them. My kids attend or have attended almost all programs, also their local elementary school was part of art in school program and my girls work was always selected for the exhibition My girl is autistic and is taking pre college level classes now in HS, she tells me that art is her scape, not even computers.. I’m happy to see she has her prefer activity they allow her to decompress from the city. Elementary art & yeah. Huge amounts of apathy in the oldest kids. I’ve not had an enjoyable or successful 5th grade class period the entire school year. I will say that my K-4 kids for the MOST part, do seem genuinely interested in what we do and attempt it. BUT we have a huge issue with not listening & not understanding how to be intentional with our artwork by taking time to think about it and make choices. I see a LOT of scribbling & very little care for the product. And very few of them seem to be able to originate ideas, even basic ones, they largely lack imagination. I don’t expect revolutionary thought from them, but they genuinely cannot conjure up their own ideas no matter how simple the prompt is.
French teacher here, the Goodbye 8Th Grade On My Way To Be Class Of 2028 Graduate 8Th T-Shirt besides I will buy this attitude is the same unfortunately. As others have said, specialist classes like art, band, film, French, etc., are seen as “I can do whatever I want classes”. The 8s are the worst because where I live French is optional starting in grade 9. I have a class that complains they never get to do anything fun but they cannot handle anything other than sitting at their desks doing worksheets, which I hate. Solidarité! My students chose to register and still act like I’m just bothering them no matter what the activity. I can’t quite bring myself to give up entirely but I also need to let go and stop caring. Here at East Podunk Cosmodemonic Junior College, pretty much the same. They don’t show up, don’t do the assignments, dropping like flies. Apathetic losers, most of them..but most are gone now by week six of the term. A total disaster for them.
Making a physical product they can use usually engages them more. I teach digital art but everyone wants to do 3D printing. Around a holiday, I say “this can be a free gift for your mom for Valentine’s Day” and that gets some moving. They all focus like crazy when they have to do a repetitive physical task like sanding or organizing art supplies. We made pixel art characters then remade their pixel art with perler beads and they went nuts. Now try teaching programming or anything technology related. Not only is it a subject most have never even seen, but they automatically think it somehow makes them less than others to know something most don’t know. I have decided I am not there to entertain them, so either they put in effort or they see me again the Goodbye 8Th Grade On My Way To Be Class Of 2028 Graduate 8Th T-Shirt besides I will buy this next year, and keep going until they get the credit they need to graduate. My bonus is that my grade for them is generally what keeps them from playing sports and I am the only teacher that never gives them a pass for any sport. I just don’t care about sports and have to force them to do the work they hate so much somehow.
That’s odd, I enjoyed art but wasn’t excited about it like science as a kid. It definitely came out in my freestyle bike riding later though. Did hundreds of freestyle shows at schools, those kids were usually into it, some way too cool to acknowledge us but it’s all artistic expression. Gen Ed teachers don’t get how hard electives can be if the Goodbye 8Th Grade On My Way To Be Class Of 2028 Graduate 8Th T-Shirt besides I will buy this school is just dumping uninterested kids into these classes. I teach history, and I fully expect students to be apathetic about history but at least they can almost imagine it matters because it’s reading and writing. However, I got asked to teach a chess elective once, and it was the worst time of my life. I was told kids would opt into the class, but that turned out not to be true for nearly every student. I can teach history to an uninterested kid, but teaching chess(and I have to assume art, like OP Does) to uninterested kids is so depressing it’s unbelievable. I get it if you don’t like history, and I will try to get you to see why maybe it’s a cooler topic than you think. But I really don’t feel like convincing you that chess is interesting. I wonder if just the general knowledge that the school could be shot up at any time, and there’s no good jobs on the horizon, the world’s burning and they’ll never own a home has anything to do with it? Why kill yourself? I hear that from the teens.
