Do this. Also, the Good Luck Rabbit Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway shirt besides I will buy this IRS is actually reasonable. I was amazed. They accused me of a thing or two. I explained myself and it was all cleared up. Take a look at the irs.gov site, read their FAQ about the situation, make sure the phone number on the website is the same as the one on the letter. You got put on hold? I ended up being told to get fucked and try again in later. I ended up using some back office trickiery from my work phone to get ahold of a human. Double check the number online to make sure it’s the right one, or photo copy your receipt or tax return from 2020 and mail it to the IRS, again using the address you find on the .gov address If you’re concerned, contact the IRS directly, NOT via the notice. Again ASSUME THE NOTICE IS A SCAM. Talk to the actual IRS. They’ll tell you. I just scrolled through most of this thread and I have a quick question. Why would you post this question looking for answers, receive a BUNCH of answers declaring this may be a scam, and then try to reason with those commenters that you don’t think it’s a scam? Dude, listen to these people and go to irs.gov and call the number there. What is the big deal with doing this? If you don’t follow through with contacting the IRS through their website, and this does turn out to be a scam…c’mon now.

Do you live in NY? If so, Google shows a PO Box in Kansas City? When I had to send estate paperwork it was to a PO Box in Tx. My dad worked at the Good Luck Rabbit Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway shirt besides I will buy this Ogden office for over 20 years. I just asked him, he said that the NY address you gave is a legit IRS building. It’s probably some remote office. I’ve gotten an irs letter for a real problem. The letter doesn’t give a lot of details and says to call them. What you have sounds like a scam. There is no just correct your doc and send us a check. If there is an issue you have to file again and if your account is delinquent you’ll owe late fees. They won’t calculate that until after you file. So any letter with a ton of details is probably a scam Just because it says it’s an IRS building doesn’t mean anything. You can go on google maps and say your local Walmart is the CIA and it would show. Go to the website, find actual contact info and call.
Do not use any numbers or emails from that correspondence just incase it’s a scam. Contact the Good Luck Rabbit Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway shirt besides I will buy this irs through the irs government website and have them confirm any unpaid taxes. IRS is a big scam this time of year. I’d not use the number on the letter. I’d go on the IRS website and get contact info from there. Email them a scan of the letter and ask if it’s actually from them. Then ask them where to send your receipts or proof. They might even have a fraud email that you can send this is like this too to confirm legitimacy. Under no circumstances would I respond to this or anything similar and DO NOT start sending your personal documents or information to the address on the letter you received. Don’t call the number either. Find the proper agency on a .gov site or you can actually visit a local IRS office. They have one in my area and they were fast and helpful. Scamming has become very sophisticated. I know that receiving a letter from the IRS is extremely unsettling but do your due diligence. Scammers want you to be shook up in the hopes you will immediately respond out of fear. If, in fact, this really turns out to be the actual IRS, you have documentation and it can be handled face to face with an agent at a local office. To me, it would be worth the trip.

The IRS support line was pretty helpful and reasonable. I had screwed up my taxes bad one year and was freaking out and they basically responded with, “yeah no problem. Here’s the Good Luck Rabbit Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway shirt besides I will buy this form and what to do with it.” Same! I had put my mental armor on before calling them with questions, thinking they’d be like the DMV, but they were super helpful and pleasant. I think they’ve figured out it’s easier to get people to pay their taxes by having positive customer service than treating everyone with a question like a suspect (I’m looking at you, DMV). I can’t encourage this enough, call the IRS number. You might be on the phone a while, but every agent I’ve ever worked with was extremely helpful. I volunteer for a 501c3 that lost status, it took a year to get back, but the agent assigned to our case would spend hours on the phone with our accountant trying everything they could to get us the right info, the easiest to submit, explained answers to our questions in an easy way to understand. We were able to get it back, but there is no way would’ve been able to without the help of the IRS agent being so helpful.
You don’t need to Google, in fact there are scam sites that will come up in a Google result. Just go to irs.gov First, make sure the Good Luck Rabbit Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway shirt besides I will buy this letter is legitimately from the IRS. All IRS letters/notices have a standardized code at the top. Notices will start with “CP” and have a number after that. Letters will start with a number and end in “C”. If the notice you received doesn’t have that code it’s not from the IRS. It should also have a number listed where you can call. You should search the number online to make sure it is a legitimate IRS number, but the toll free number listed on most letters/notices is usually different than the general number listed online. Most of the letters I send out use a number ending in 0922. You can try calling, but if it’s a single balance for your wife they will likely not discuss it with you. Assuming you confirm the letter is real, all you’d really have to do is send in a signed copy of the return for that year. I’d include the receipt showing that you paid the return with it. Chances are that will be the last you hear from them, but if there are more issues they will send you another letter. It’s important to know that the IRS does like 99% of all correspondence through the mail. It is very rare for you to receive calls from them. Emails are never used. So send in the return and the receipt and just be on the lookout for any additional correspondence. As long as you respond to all the notices or letters you receive you will be good. Hope that helps!
I don’t see any number starting with a CP or ending with a C. In the Good Luck Rabbit Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway shirt besides I will buy this upper right corner it says “Input op:” followed by a bunch of numbers, then right below that it says “BODC: SB” In the middle near the top just above where it starts with “dear taxpayer…” it says “taxpayer identification number: xxx-xx-1234” (instead of 1234 it had the actual last 4 digits of my wife’s SOS). Then it says “tax period: Dec 31, 2020” followed by “form: 1040” Unlike many of the other commenters, I think your original post sounds like a legit letter from the IRS and not a scam, what you just commented here also seems legit. It’s still a good idea to be wary and verify the number is a real IRS number, but don’t write it off as a scam and ignore it.
Yeah those are all things that would be on an IRS notice or letter. My next question is what does the Good Luck Rabbit Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway shirt besides I will buy this notice say to do? Most notices or letters like the one you got will say something like “If you filed the return please send a signed copy of the return. If you had not filed a return please do so now.” It should give you an address to send that response. I’d suggest googling the address listed to confirm it is an IRS service center. That sounds like a letter I got from them last year. I mailed a copy of the return and a copy of the cancelled check. Haven’t heard back. Even phone numbers can be spoofed to look like it came from a different number. Go directly to the official irs website or an office to check your tax payment history. In my (limited) experience, the people at the IRS who handle these issues are not the monsters we’ve been taught. They will listen snd try to help. Make the call.
If you file yourself, call the Good Luck Rabbit Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway shirt besides I will buy this IRS using the number listed for them from the official website (not any number in email, text or even mail to confirm it is the actual IRS and not a scam and speak to a representative to verify their records. If they are actually incorrect they will give you instructions to send your proof to them. If you file through an accountant or tax rep then contact them directly and tell them what you received and then follow up with the IRS directly as directed above. OP……to get a real, live human at the IRS follow this exactly, then when you get that human tell them what is going on. Have any and all info ready to go, esp the Tax year filed paperwork. They will most likely ask info from that return. The system will ask you for your SSN. Do not enter a number. It will ask you twice before moving on automatically.
This sounds like a phishing bank scam claiming to be the Good Luck Rabbit Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway shirt besides I will buy this IRS and demanding that you give them your bank information. Be on speaker phone and have her say (fake IRS agent name you) her name doesn’t owe money from 2020 I’m looking at her information. Watch them hang up fast. Know someone who got a fake letter from the IRS she went to IRS, and they called at the right time, and they hung up fast when speaking with a real agent. Sounds like you know the answer… you can do a conference call or put them on speaker phone but your wife should be the one to actually make the call. I would also advise pulling up any bank records (if your bank site goes back that far) to find any evidence from your end that the payment was processed.
Go to irs.gov and get a phone number, then call that number to make sure the Good Luck Rabbit Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway shirt besides I will buy this letter is legit. If it is, they will tell you what to do next. If not, then the letter goes to the trash as a scam. DO NOT call the number from the letter or mail or email anything to them based on that letter. ONLY call the IRS number listed on their website. Go to the IRS site and pull a transcript for your taxes for that year. If they have it, then ignore the scammer. Look up an IRS number separately from any communications that you have received to ensure that you are not going to be calling a scammer and losing all your money. They will be able to direct you and help you figure out if it is legitimate and what you need to do if anything.
It’s possibly a scam. I would Google how to contact the Good Luck Rabbit Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway shirt besides I will buy this IRS directly and go that route, rather than clicking or calling any link they’ve provided. Never use a number provided to you in unsolicited correspondence of ANY type—letter, email, text, whatever. Always find the number on line, independently. If you don’t trust your own search skills, ASK A LIBRARIAN. They will weep with joy at being so useful. Maybe not, but they will be happy to help. (You can even call and ask if you don’t want to visit a local branch). I got a letter from the irs saying I owed $200000 for a past year. I was advised by an attorney to just write a letter pointing out the mistakes. The irs accepted my version and that was that. I think the irs is sending out letters generated by AI or machine that no human ever reviewed. My grandparents received a letter similarly to yours. They were scammed out of $40,000. I would suggest taking that letter to your local office for clarification.
Yes, independently contact the Good Luck Rabbit Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway shirt besides I will buy this IRS, do not call the number listed in the letter or use their email or website if provided in the letter. Also, your wife will most likely need to call if you want specifics from the IRS since she wasn’t married to you at the time. Also, did the letter say anything about late fees and interest accrued on top of whatever her original tax debt was? I’m assuming that she had to pay taxes that year and wasn’t getting a refund. She has the receipt showing she paid, that should be enough BUT you want to verify that you are talking to someone from the real IRS when you call to verify if it’s a legitimate letter. If, somehow it IS legit, it’s possible that for some reason someone messed up when processing her return. The IRS rep should be able to walk you through what steps would be needed to get this problem cleared up.
IRS scams are a big deal year round but it’s around this time of year when you start seeing a larger percentage of them. And more so in April. I actually got a phone call several years ago (actually was getting a few fake IRS robo calls each year) from a live person. They called me like, at 9pm informing me that there was a local police officer headed to my house that very minute who had a warrant for me for undeclared income that had incurred taxes I didn’t pay. He said if I were to pay the Good Luck Rabbit Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway shirt besides I will buy this taxes owed on the amount, to him on the phone, he’d call the warrant off. First thing I did was ask what year was this “undeclared” income and how much that was supposedly Earned by me, he named a year (about 10 years in the past-yes, the IRS can run years late in finding and going after unpaid taxes but not usually that far back) that I never had a job as I was staying at home with my kids. The amount was around $2800, the money he wanted was less than that. I then told him I doubted his claim about the warrant as I know the IRS would first send me letters about the debt. And at least the final, if nit the first, would’ve been sent registered or certified, he claimed they did send a certified letter and that I had signed for it a couple months before he called me. I told him that I hadn’t received any certified letters in over 6 years. He still insisted I should pay up before the cops arrived. I told him that I know that warrants don’t work that way, once a warrant is issued and the police are on their way to serve it, they are required to take the person in, there’s no such thing as it being cancelled when they’re on their way. Oh, no, he assured me they were on their way.
But that time, I’d wasted about 30 minutes of his time. I then told him that I figured I’d get dressed and wait for the Good Luck Rabbit Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway shirt besides I will buy this cops. As he was frantically trying to convince me to not risk jail and to pay the bill, I dropped my ace in the hole. “I happen to know how the department designated to seek out underreported/unreported works as I used to work for the IRS in that section”. He hung up so fast. I was pleased that I managed to keep him from trying to scam some unsuspecting person for at least 30 minutes. He may have not made any others that night. Interestingly enough, the live calls from the IRS stopped coming. And for about 2 years pretty much all IRS calls stopped. Now we once in awhile get the robo call stating we owe back taxes and need to call X number (or press 1 to talk to a representative) to get it settled before they put a warrant out on us for non payment.
The guy didn’t know my address, didn’t have a name that was the Good Luck Rabbit Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway shirt besides I will buy this source of my undeclared income, and his name was “agent smith”. He rattled off a fake ID number and gave me a phone number I could call to verify his credentials. Lol. I didn’t call it, but I did send an inquiry to the IRS about it. Got back the message that it was a known scam. I’m pretty sure your letter is a scam, but you should verify it as one just in case. They may ask you to send them the contact info provided in the letter for their files. If she paid by check she might want to double check that it cleared the bank. There’s also a SLIGHT possibility that a data clerk mistyped a number when entering her return that caused her payment to be credited to someone else’s return, but tax return entries are double checked so I doubt that happened as I don’t see how 2 different clerks would make the same error. Don’t send anything to anyone until you talk to the actual IRS about the issue using the phone number you find on their website, not the letter.
I would recommend calling first. I needed to send documentation to the Good Luck Rabbit Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway shirt besides I will buy this IRS and had to send it 4 different times, because they apparently never got it. Finally a saint on the phone was able to help me directly. This was 5 years ago now and my hold times were 2-3 hours each time. I sure hope they have improved, but I would plan on a LONG hold time. Make a photo copy of the receipt and if she has a bank statement showing the withdrawal, make a copy of that too and mail both, along with a copy of the letter, to the IRS address from the official IRS website. You can also find the official help line phone number for the IRS on the same site and can call them and ask about this all. I hate the IRS as a whole at least as much as the next guy; but the once I did ever have to contact them, the agent I spoke with was polite and very helpful: I’d send in a copy of the receipt and that specific transaction. They don’t need to look at other transactions.
Don’t send anything out of haste! Verify legitimacy first or you may be very sorry later. My hubby managed to get his expensive computer fried. Fortunately, he did not pay them to restore it after I did the Good Luck Rabbit Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway shirt besides I will buy this after-the-fact investigation of the company they purported to be with (our systems manufacturer). The scammers actually could take their “authenticity” to a point, but then it failed. They didn’t get our money but our computer could not be restored. Call and talk to them. They’re usually fairly reasonable if you’re cool with them. Probably an administrative error. They are getting savvy if the scammers are sending letters now. I think they caught on that the IRS doesn’t email/call/text about owed money. Letters only. They (scammers) tried to get me in 2020-2021. Told me they send the sheriff after me. I laughed and told them to do it. In their terrible broken English, they got HEATED. I had a little bit of fun with it before they hung up on me.
If it is a scam, absolutely let the Good Luck Rabbit Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway shirt besides I will buy this IRS know and maybe even the USPS? They are committing the crime via the mail (assuming it was USPS) which then makes its their turf. Like everyone pointed out it could be a scam. But it could also be a mistake. The IRS audited me one year claiming I didn’t pay taxes on some stocks my work gave me and I sold, so I called them and said they took the taxes out of the money when I sold it and the lady was like OH you’re right it looks like they did, sorry that is our mistake, I’ll update our records. And that was that. If you call and they want you to pay right this moment or try any other strong arm tactics to get your ss# or passwords for something, then it’s definitely a scam. Since she actually paid it should be really easy to clear up in a few minutes, assuming it’s legit. I assume everything is a scam. Everything. I’m so paranoid, I’ll hang up the phone, find the website, call the number on the site and ask for the person I was talking to. If that checks out, I’m good.
