Honestly, get rid of not being able to have a student repeat a grade. And then they will just attend a special computer class that allows them to catch up (read: use google to cheat and make it look like they did something) and magically they graduate. If they knew that failure meant they had to repeat a grade some to most would actually put in some effort, but right now lazy is rewarded, so why should they change? Is there a policy reason for why students are moved to the next grade even if they haven’t mastered the material? Honestly trying to understand why this is happening at all. Sure, students and parents will be upset and make a stink if the kid needs to repeat, but that can’t be the true reason why students here never repeat a grade. Could someone enlighten me for why the system is set up that way? I’m not sure why, but where I teach (well sub, but I have ran a classroom of my own while subbing) students only need to pass one semester out of 6 in middle school to get to high school, and if they fail Algebra I, they still get promoted to Geometry. So we end up with seniors with less than 5 credits sitting in a computer classroom (usually 30 to 50 per classroom with one teacher) doing computer work in order to earn their credits. Had a a student tell me that he just cheated with google and finished a semester of Algebra in a week.

So many schools and teachers give in and the worst punishment they get is not being allowed to go to a pizza party. It sucks to say but they really need to trim the bad behavior out of schools. Expulsions and transfers. Set up a high risk school or something to try to save them but they can’t keep the wild kids in with the average ones. Whenever I’m in a class and I see one or two meek, well behaved kids surrounded by 7-8 monsters (and 12 middle of the road or worse kids) it feels like child abuse.

There are many evils with tracking, but at some point we might have to try a modified version of it in public schools. I believe that the school, student and parents should all have a voice in deciding what educational path the student is going to pursue. In my class (11th grade) the biggest issue is that too many students and their parents don’t give a fuck, so I end up being a babysitter. Students come to class with headphones in and think that it’s totally normal to spend the period watching videos on their phone. This shit happens in my AP class and my non-AP class. It’s beyond ridiculous. It might be helpful to figure out which students actually give a fuck about their education and which ones prefer to spend their school day watching Netflix or hanging around the bathroom.

Namely keep the fucking phone in your backpack and do the damned reading. Very few students will qualify for anything better… unless they have NA lineage, then they get in free with a full ride. Some states/schools are going to free tuition for students from home making under 75k or thereabouts… personally, I can’t wait to see what our universities look like when they are heavily populated by 18-20yos that have known since they started school that they were getting into college and won’t have to pay for it. They’re going to tell you it’s the Best Thing Ever whether it is or not. I watched my kids do arithmetic their school/teacher-approved method. Didn’t understand it. Showed them the way I was taught back in the ’70s. They agreed it was faster and shorter. Point: there is more than one path to the right answer. If a kid doesn’t get one, try another. Common Core is a problem? Dump it and try something else. CC is something I might use doing arithmetic in my head. It’s not useful to me on paper. Kids don’t understand borrowing for subtraction? Demonstrate using dimes and pennies. A column for each. The goal at the end of subtraction is to have 9 or fewer of each. Doesn’t have to be real. Poker chips would suffice – white pennies, blue dimes, red dollars. Numbers are abstract. Give them something to manipulate. This is how Waldorf education does multiplication. Kids have an innate understanding of the commutative law.
As teachers, we need to start telling ourselves that a lot of what we do is above our pay grade. We are too generous. I also, unfortunately, don’t see how that happens with three Federal Education Department still in tact, but perhaps it could be reformed to do some good. I’ve seen parents give their kids iPads to “keep them occupied”. Those same kids are now addicted to their devices. As a parent, I have strict screen time rules. I prefer my kids read or entertain themselves without a ipad or similar device. Simple. The government needs to start up patriotic propaganda commercials laced with nostalgia that show families reading books to their little kids, older kids mowing their elderly neighbors lawns, and families praying around the dinner table. Problem solved.
Get rid of standardized testing and start giving children tools to use in their toolbox. The whole phrase “give a man a fish” is so important in regards to education of children. I think a lot of issues could be solved if students had a firm foundation which they should stand upon. I also feel like grinding fundamentals in lower grade levels AND re-visiting them in higher grade levels to reinforce those concepts is important. For example, maybe we should read less Shakespeare in high school English classes and start taking deep dives into the grammatical structure and syntax of the language. (I can hear every English teacher draw their sword. It’s fine! We can keep Macbeth, Hamlet, and Othello in the curriculum.. I’m just saying drop Romeo and Juliet. Four years of plays from The Bard is too much, TBH.

I was a 3rd grade equivalent learning about natural and transposed order, active and passive voice, present/past/past participle verbs, the difference between compound and complex sentences, being forced to take random sentences from novels and diagram them, understanding how to use prepositional phrases properly, the difference between direct and indirect objects, phonics textbooks (where I had to learn concepts like diphthongs), etc. I also had to do vocabulary builders and she would always buy reading comprehension textbooks (where I had to read stories and answer questions whose answers were only inferred from the stories, rather than outright stated).
All that above… it helped me from an academic standpoint when I got to public school in 9th grade (thanks mom, for dropping me off in public school right in the God loves Sinners blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness shirt Apart from…,I will love this middle of puberty and the power struggle freshmen face). I had so many tools to draw from to understand contextually everything in my English classes. (It’s also the reason I didn’t pick up the standard Jersey accent.) EDIT: Want a more extreme idea? Ban all electronics. Students have to take notes by hand. After all, there are many studies that show that something written by hand has a greater chance to stick than something typed. High schoolers might hate it since they’re so used to tech, but if we start them at a young age (like kindergarten), they won’t be so obstinate later in life. Or, how about, students who fail actually fail. Let them be held back a grade. There’s no lesson to be learned by giving rewards to those that did not earn it. Build literary skills around the technology skills these babies come in with already. I had a parent freak out recently bc her kid wasn’t doing enough writing with paper and pencil. Even recently if I need to work out a math problem (such as converting a recipe or something) I pull up my phone and do it with my finger in a drawing app (and then ofc use the calculator). These are the things kids need to know how to do to be successful in the world. Even reading, I read because I enjoy information and stories, sure. I also listen to a TON of audiobooks, and when I have a migraine I listen to EVERYTHING to access my phone. I only need to read the “voiceover” button and click it or highlight and select “speak”.
Enforce discipline with afterschool detention where disruptive students are forced to study. Call it “additional learning time [“ALT”]) and allow teachers to use this tool freely when managing classrooms. Frame it to be able to get around IEP/504 manifestation issues by saying it isn’t a punishment, but rather additional mandatory educational programming to ensure academic equity. School is expected to solve everything. They don’t know how to/aren’t able to set their children up for success – reading together, limiting screen time, feeding them healthy food and making sure they get good sleep, emotionally validating their child and teaching them to regulate emotions and make good choices, making sure their child feels safe, loved, and respected. They don’t know how to do this for themselves, and they don’t have access to the help they need -their own parents didn’t either – and the cycle continues. Kids come to school with their brains literally wired differently due to trauma they’ve endured and being glued to screens from a young age. School will not solve that. Human decency will.
It takes a village to raise a child. We need to focus on mental health, as well as safe and healthy ways to live and raise our children. We need health care for all, including mental health care. We need transportation in order to access everything needed. We need easy access to all of these things, regardless of income, expenses, and addiction or mental health struggles. What is wrong with her obsessing over fair skin and hating women in public?
