These concepts are great in the God is great quilting is good and people are crazy shirt besides I will buy this beginning for helping explain detachment from thought, and helping others who are early in their journey, but they become damaging to present awareness in the long run, and they only reinforce spiritual ego. Your “narrator” or “I” never leaves, theres only detachment from the narrator. It’s similar to pain and the human body. Detaching from your body is completely possible when in full present awareness, but we wouldn’t say we have no body. Maybe. But in reality it’s not possible. You can’t have a a completely empty mind. You can only observe what is present. My understanding of emptying the mind is about pulling your attention out of thinking and judgments (the mind) and into observing the sensations of the body. Which is 100% possible but is harder to do for lengths of time when you aren’t practiced at it. It’s not about turning off brain activity which would be impossible unless you’re dead. Yea but even saying that’s “emptying the mind” is nonsense. Because you are observing thoughts which means your mind isn’t empty. I know I’m being nitpicky but it’s one of those things that bugs the life out of me. So many people are put off of mindfulness and meditation because they don’t believe they can “empty their mind” or “stop all thinking”. Neither of those things are possible or even the point.

So many people are put off of mindfulness and meditation because they don’t believe they can “empty their mind” or “stop all thinking”. Neither of those things are possible or even the God is great quilting is good and people are crazy shirt besides I will buy this point. Emptying the mind is what you get as a by product when you make a realization and change your perspective of your life. You kill your ego when you realize its not part of you, its a program to control you. It’s not about emptying the mind because again that can’t be done. But we can observe the mind just as it is, without judgement or ego. Are you trying to say that person would need to think to have no thoughts to get no thoughts? Thats not how it works. There is a picture and you are observing it throught a small pipe, if you tossed pipe away you would see whole picture and thus change your perspective. We’ll have to agree to disagree. In my experience, you absolutely can empty the mind of thoughts by putting all the attention outside of the mind. I guess different people can have different experiences. I’m not gonna comment on the point of mindfulness or meditation because I’m sure that’s personal for everyone However, if you make your brain your servant rather than your master, what those thoughts are change, how often they occur and who is identified with the thought changes. When it came time for our group to leave India for Nepal, this woman asked if she could join us. Because she was such good company, we encouraged her to come along. A few of us were also curious to see how her realization would appear in another context. And so it came to pass that a woman whose enlightenment had just been confirmed by one of the greatest living exponents of Advaita Vedanta was in the room when we received our first teachings from Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, who was generally thought to be one of the greatest living Dzogchen masters.
