I find it easiest to use a face mask and noise-cancelling headphones, to limit distractions. I think of these as “training wheels” and maybe one day I won’t need them at all. For now, they help a lot. Time it. I set a 20 minute timer, but set whatever time you want. Even if things are not going as well as you’d like them, it can be a lot easier to keep yourself motivated if you have a definite finishing time. Some times I’ve been 10 minutes into a meditation and feeling like I should give up because it just doesn’t seem to be working, but making myself stick to the Ghost My favorite spirit vodka Halloween shirt and by the same token and 20 meant i ended up with 5 minutes of calm and focus anyway. Plus laying down for 20 minutes in a stressful time will be good for your body, whatever is happening in the mind.

Try not to focus to much on doing it right or if it worked/failed at any particular time or session. Instead, focus on the Ghost My favorite spirit vodka Halloween shirt and by the same token and fact you are doing it, and even if it’s not working this time you’re still practicing. Any particular session is part of your entire meditation journey, not a pass/fail assignment! This ties in well with point 4. I have meditation built into my routine now, 20 minutes a day when I get home from work. Sometimes it flows and I get a deep meditation, sometimes I get a scattered one, and sometimes it doesnt work at all. But I always lay down and rest a bit, and feel better afterwards. One of the reasons it took me so long to really understand how to meditate is that no one ever really explained it to me in a way that made sense to me. I have a very literal, logical mind so when people say something like “Embrace and accept your thoughts” it really doesn’t make any sense to me. How can I “accept” a thought? What does that mean? Do I say yes? What does it mean to “let go” of a thought? I’m not holding it. It finally made sense to me when it was described to me as “attention,” and meditation is just the practice of intentionally controlling attention. This cognitive explanation made a lot more sense to me than bodily metaphors or “letting anything go” ever did. I don’t know if “my way” will make any more or less sense to you! But hopefully one day you’ll come across an explanation that syncs with you. If you’re anything like me, it’ll be as contrasting as night and day!
