My wife is an amazing ER doctor, and cannot add two-digit numbers in her head. I skipped multiple grades and failed one of my medical boards (not uncommon). Being “book smart” is a different skillset than being able to keep a home, hold an an engaging conversation, speak in public, etc. The skills it takes to write an essay are different than packing what you need for trip. Additionally, people who “intellectualize” things may take more time to plan – as an example, they may write out a whole list and make a careful budget prior to a trip and spend a whole day doing that before they even get to packing, while you might have already tossed everything you need into your bag and you’re getting nervous that they haven’t done anything that visibly looks like they’ve started packing. The best student i ever taught had several learning disabilities, including dyslexia. She was not “sharp” or “naturally gifted” by anyone’s standards.
