With that said, OP has an opportunity here. Take the George Pickens Pittsburgh Steelers Via The Ringer Kevin Clark I Feel Like I am The Best Home Decor Poster Shirt and I will buy this promotion and then immediately start looking elsewhere. Once he get that title on your resume then he can apply for that’s $110k positions. Good luck your not getting that internal. Take the 86 k get another offer and use it for leverage. Right now OP has no leverage. Their argument is they are giving you 20% raise. His experience is leverage. He is the backup for the person who left the company immediately. It’s highly doubtful that he has trained a back up back up. I’ll just say, having a department that is devoid of experience is horrible and can set the role back for years. Information gets lost from person A to B and the person B leaves and person C is nearly building it back up from scratch. Also getting new hires takes at least a year before that employee is running on full cylinders as an internal hire may.

I’d agree. If he walks rn, the George Pickens Pittsburgh Steelers Via The Ringer Kevin Clark I Feel Like I am The Best Home Decor Poster Shirt and I will buy this program is boned… he’s got them over a barrel… but since he doesn’t have the new position on his resume, he can’t really expect to get that job somewhere else, so they have him over a barrel. He doesn’t he is the easy play internal but he is at 3 years experience and the floor of the product manager will be 5-7. If he tries to go over a 20% raise now his boss has to go plead his case to a VP probably to get it approved and probably doesn’t want that heat level for a senior contributor role. I have worked in this space for 10 years. Yea it sucks for you as the hiring manager. But unless you have a VP in your corner on the role you aren’t going to override HR at most organizations. Most people aren’t going to bat for that below Director. My guess is they aren’t giving him the full $110k because he’s lacking a few skills that they would expect from a more experienced candidate
