I had a very good friend who was anti vax, coronavirus denier, anti conventional medicine, anti foreigners, and anti refugees. She believed the government was corrupt, universities were corrupt, elections were manipulated, etc. She constantly tried to ward off evil by worrying and talking about the things above, not noticing that that didn’t change anything she was worrying about. Not worrying means you have to find trust a) in destiny/the universe/god/whatever somehow working and not just giving you purely evil things in your life, b) in yourself, and your ability to deal with problems once they pop up, and c) in others also not being purely evil. That’s what these people can’t do. They belong into a psychotherapist’s office to work on their trust issues and their irrational fears. Instead, they try to overcompensate by seeking security in social groups that create enemy images, thus strengthening their common identity and their group’s internal cohesion. Of course, having a social group you belong to gives security, we all know that from high school. But it’s not stable security because it stems mainly from outside (social embeddedness) instead of inside (healthy self-worth). Also, it of course opens the door to exploitation, brain washing, an “against each other”-spirit, hate, irrationality and, thus, ultimately unfreedom.
