I have many years experience in Autocad from production design in entertainment but have left the field because the pay sucks and the in person work is miserable. Not who you replied to but I am a registered architect working as a design/project manager at a large commercial firm in the US. I also lived and worked in London for a few years after grad school. All of that just to say, I think I have a fairly well-informed perspective and I’m gonna be completely honest, getting a job at an architecture firm without a professional degree is going to be a challenge. The “architectural draftsperson” career has been on the decline for a long time for a couple reason and I personally don’t know of anyone in my network hiring that roll anymore. I’ve definitely come across late-career draftsmen still employed but they are few and far between. First thing that comes to mind that’s going to be working against you is the fact that most practices have moved away from CAD and into BIM (Revit is the go-to software in the US, Archicad is probably more common in Europe and former commonwealth nations). A lot of factors play into this but at the end of the day, BIM has shifted the drafting roll from a dedicated draftsperson to new grads/young licensed staff based on the workflow. There’s also been somewhat of a mentality shift in that if we’re going to train someone, we’re going to put that effort in training someone who will one day have sign and seal privileges. In the west, eligibility to sit for license generally requires a professional architecture degree.

The other big thing that’s going to be an uphill battle for you is that you’re going to be expected to know/quickly learn technical detailing. It’s not just drawing and modifying plan drawings. A sole practitioner or small residential office might still use just use sketchup with layout for the entire thing. They also might do everything from concept to CD in Revit. From what I’ve seen, there’s somewhat of a hard line between firms that do both single family residential along with some smaller commercial work vs strictly single family residential (which tends to sole practitioners or an older architect with a very small group of people working under them).
