If I text or email someone under 30 and capitalize my sentences I just come off as ancient. I believe education is important and value it, but it may need to change for a changing world. We also used to remove kids from the system if they were a problem, now we force them to stay which causes them to disrupt the other kids further. When I was doing my student teaching over 10 years ago I taught at a poorer, semi-urban school and it was astounding to be how bad this was. There were multiple kids in the sophomore history class who hadn’t passed the prerequisite history class, hadn’t passed any classes at all, and were continuing to be moved up grade levels. We had two students who were being called “seniors” because they were in their 4th year there but had never passed a class. One of them told me he was just waiting to turn 18 so he could stop coming. I also witnessed kids who couldn’t read harassing each other over not being able to read, it was insane.
This post could be describing my school as well. My last batch of 9th graders for math I had SEVERAL test 1st and 2nd grade on diagnostics. This isn’t from Covid. They are 7+ grade levels behind.
