I absolutely love the song, so it pains me to write this, but “We Work the Black Seam” by Sting contains the following scientifically incorrect line: “Deadly for 12,000 years is Carbon-14.” Uhm, it’s not deadly; it’s how we do carbon dating. Not scientific but Kanye West says “keep it 300, like the Romans” and that always pisses me off. It came out just after the 300 film and if he’d watched it even once he would have known it’s was Spartans not Romans and Spartans would have been fit in the line without changing the cadence or anything like that. If this guy has never been south of Queens then he’s never been to Brooklyn or a significant chunk of Manhattan. I read a “fun fact” about that… he was in some particularly horrific fundie religion, a big feature of which is that obsession with doomsday, right? And he was thinking about blood red rain, a thing that would happen near The End lol. And he figured the red rain would actually look purple because of the blue sky above showing through it. The purple rain is blood falling from the sky. So the image is based on this horrific concept that he expects the world to literally go to hell anytime now, and he was sad his lady friend was gonna get punished for not agreeing to convert to the same cult as him. It’s sad really, that someone who put so much beauty out into the world thought there was an all-powerful being that’s sadistic and insane and gonna just trash everything any day and torture everybody except its asskissers. He must have been very stressed out all the time, from thinking such a horrific nightmare was real. Such beauty in his art and his person, but inside were all these terrifying ideas that must have kept him up nights. Poor guy. Fuck whoever warped him like that.
