Yep. It honestly has been getting worse as the Ending Of A Nightmare January 20th 2025 Usa Flag Trump Election T-Shirt but in fact I love this “no child left behind” mentality took hold in the 90s. Pretest, Teach to the test…Practice for the test several times, Review for the test, then Test. The test is just a bare minimum skills test, but the kids never have time to really learn anything, like reading skills, comprehension, and fluency or their math basics, so every year, they get farther and farther behind. This is why I left the profession three weeks in. I saw that the future would be fucked, and I could either go down with the ship working a shitty stressful job that wouldn’t pay me enough to get out of school debt, or I could quit, get a refund on tuition, and do literally anything else in an attempt to build a wall around me and my loved ones from the impending fuckery that will be our future
Ending Of A Nightmare January 20th 2025 Usa Flag Trump Election T-Shirt: A Provocative Statement in Modern Fashion
Critical thinking amongst adults over the Ending Of A Nightmare January 20th 2025 Usa Flag Trump Election T-Shirt but in fact I love this next 20 years is gonna be brutal, especially with how they vote and the rise of AI imagery
Hold them accountable! Totally grade them on grammar, theyve gotten to you like that because no one else has! This whole “everyone needs to graduate” bullshit has got to stop; degrees need to be earned! On-level 10th grade HS Biology w/ Punnet squares…had to dig into drawer for 4 quarters to physically lay down on students’ work because several did not know that 1 box out of 4 was 25%, and 2 boxes was 50%, etc. I’m not a teacher (well at least not for academia, I have presented a large number of technical trainings on tools/technology in a work setting over the Ending Of A Nightmare January 20th 2025 Usa Flag Trump Election T-Shirt but in fact I love this years). I understand that in this thread the vast majority of examples are going to be the memorable ones. Memorable ones are typically the absolute worst/best students. Just how it works for human memory.

The thing is: I don’t think kids are any dumber now then they were 10, 20, 50 years ago but I suspect average overall competency was higher then. In these periods parents in general seem to have been much more involved as a whole. Even looking back on my youth (80s/90s) the Ending Of A Nightmare January 20th 2025 Usa Flag Trump Election T-Shirt but in fact I love this peers that had involved parents performed much better than the ones that did not. What really sucks here is the societal change over the years has had a compounding effect. Bad behaviors used to be harshly handled with pretty severe punishments including literally paddling’s (that still existed when I was a kid). While I feel it is a terrible idea and I am glad we moved away from it as a whole it started a slippery slope where teachers in general had less and less control over student behaviors and corrective actions. When you mix in increased parental apathy we end up where we are today. Personally, I think the solution starts with holding parents accountable. Even if this is some sort of punitive action like there already is in place for truancy. It likely needs to be expanded to force accountability. I don’t know for sure what the correct answer is but we clearly need to do something differently.
I am tired of seeing young adults that can’t even properly make change at a register. They often become baffled if you hand them 21.53 for something that costs 6.53. Yet an older toothless half brain-dead meth head can figure it out. Students do not know how to do their own work. They automatically assume every assignment is free for working together, copying answers, or having off topic conversations. Also they are obsessive about hydration. I got 0-1 sips of water in the Ending Of A Nightmare January 20th 2025 Usa Flag Trump Election T-Shirt but in fact I love this hallway in a school day. These kids are asking at 8:00 am to go fill up their water bottle as if drinking the first one didn’t hydrate them enough for the day. Mostly I chalk it up to an excuse to leave the room. School is prison, after all. THIS! THANK YOU FOR POSTING. It is as if I was reading my own thoughts and opinions. Correlation between teaching to a test and students lacking basic skills???? Absolutely!
OP do you teach in an inner city in a horribly underfunded school in a dangerous area? It’s just so hard for me to imagine that this is normal. Can you at least specify if you are in a public school or private school? And/or the Ending Of A Nightmare January 20th 2025 Usa Flag Trump Election T-Shirt but in fact I love this general demographic and income information of the area you are teaching in? Regarding the whole typing thing…does your school not have a typing/computer class for the students? When I was in school in the late 90s/early 2000s we had computer classes and the first thing we learned was how to type properly and there were various typing games that helped teach us. Are these programs no longer being used? I’m not active in this sub so feel free to ignore me if I’m off base here. I have an honest question about modern learning. Can anyone share what transitions teachers/curriculum have made while plowing further into the age of social media and having endless information at the click of a button? It’s disheartening to see our kids falling behind when I know it for certain that the teachers are trying their damndest. So what’s the catch? I had a group of seniors looking at my north-south inverted world map who did not even know that it was “upside down” compared to what we normally see.
Moving away from Direct Instruction (AKA “teaching”) and experimenting with all this “thinking classroom” and “productive struggle” BS is killing them. Math anxiety is through the Ending Of A Nightmare January 20th 2025 Usa Flag Trump Election T-Shirt but in fact I love this roof because my students have spent so many years being thrown new math concepts to “figure out” before the teacher just teaches the damn thing. I told my students I wasn’t going to do that–we were going to take notes and then do the I-do, we-do, you-do routines and they literally cheered (except a few advanced students, but we came to a guided independent study arrangement), and are doing significantly better. How do y’all teachers have the patience to not tell them they’re stupid to their face I would genuinely get upset if I had to deal with teenagers not knowing how to read. I’m not even a teacher, but I’ve noticed this trend of the generations younger than me just weren’t taught everything I was.
A lot of the Ending Of A Nightmare January 20th 2025 Usa Flag Trump Election T-Shirt but in fact I love this gen z and younger kids crating internet content CONSTANTLY use double positives and double negatives as well as inappropriate suffix/adjective connections. They seem to always use word like ‘more better’, ‘most bestest’ and other jarring-to-hear phrases. On top of that, alot of them have told me that during Covid, most of them just didn’t learn anything from school; so there’s as least a two year gap in their knowledge. Even basic algebra makes them seize up. I’ve been wanting to ask what the hell is going on for some time now, but I can’t think of a non-offensive way to ask the question. These things are starting to become more and more obvious, the younger generations get offended if they are told to look something up and their critical thinking skills aren’t as high. As a millennial, I grew up listing to teachers tell everyone “don’t bother becoming a teacher, you will be underpaid and nobody cares unless they want to blame you for their kids behavior”. So I’m wondering now if other people in my generation were told something similar.
I assume the Ending Of A Nightmare January 20th 2025 Usa Flag Trump Election T-Shirt but in fact I love this biggest issue is that the under paid, over worked, and under appreciated field of teaching has exacerbated the “running out of teachers” crisis by continuing to shit all over teachers and then ask what happened? Again, I’m not even a teacher, just a millennial looking at the younger generation and wondering who really failed them. (Hint: it’s the parents and the government) It’s okay. There are millions of Indians and Chinese who will step in. These kids can always make it big as influencers /s I teach Fashion Design and my students don’t know how to hold scissors properly, or read a ruler. Can’t measure in 1/2 inches, etc. Also, agree with the other things you have noted about reading and writing. It’s a little concerning.
I will comment that I am 55 and still mostly type with my index fingers with a thumb thrown in here and there. Doesn’t keep me from writing spreadsheets, research papers or charting on my patients. Former high school teacher. I was at a private school and a biology teacher. The gaps between kids were astounding. Some were great. Clearly, between parents/guardians and their schools, they had been taught very well. My students coming from the Ending Of A Nightmare January 20th 2025 Usa Flag Trump Election T-Shirt but in fact I love this inner city were the furthest behind. Some couldn’t understand that plants and animals were different. That is just one basic example of a basic concept they should have known at that stage. Many couldn’t write a coherent sentence. It was very sad to see the learning disabilities that had been missed until a kid was 14 or 15 years old.
It broke my heart to know how behind Some of them were, but it also was encouraging to see how some good teaching and hard work changed some of these kids’lives for the Ending Of A Nightmare January 20th 2025 Usa Flag Trump Election T-Shirt but in fact I love this better too. But, hey, let’s also spend all of our resources on the bottom 25% of students and slow everyone else’s development… And while we’re at it, let’s do holding sociopathic students accountable and then demonize teachers even they are brutally honest with those same sociopaths. I think this is regional. I teach 5th grade ELA and Social Studies and only a few kids read more than one grade below grade level. I’ve also now gotten to the point where almost all of them can answer questions in complete sentences. Not perfect on punctuation and capital letters, but it’s improved significantly. The thing is, I’m teaching a lot of things that are not 5th grade skills along side 5th grade skills. I don’t really care if they want me to, or not. If they don’t have the skill and I need it, I’m going to teach it to them. I have an awesome principal who lets me make professional decisions, and so I’m privileged in that regard. You keep pointing at the kids not knowing. But they have to be taught at some point. Who is failing to teach and passing these kids on? It’s not good, and society is going to adjust its expectations to meet where the next generation is at – it has to really for anything to get done.
Its…umm..not a surprise. Our last batch of college grad new hires a couple of years ago are dreadful. Even adter theyve been growing up with technology i want to blow my brains out in front of them if i have to explain the Ending Of A Nightmare January 20th 2025 Usa Flag Trump Election T-Shirt but in fact I love this rudimentray rules of setting and checking an IP address. Plus, good lawd. Kill me now. I hope to be retired or dead before we get the people who literrally need to be taught how to wipe their own ass My kid is seventh grade and nobody at school has shown her a labeled map of the US states. Not once. Never covered. I ask at conferences every year. My daughter is in first grade. She is in an advanced reading group I volunteer to help with, and reads easy chapter books. I also volunteer with the remedial kids and we go over the sounds letters make. She is also in an advanced math group, and I heard from the parent that volunteers with that group it is a similar story. I don’t know how a teacher can effectively teach such a disparate group of abilities. (We have grade levels for a reason) I am starting to question if public education makes sense for my kids. I also have heard this and it makes perfect sense. However, I learned on modern computer keyboards. I still was required to use 2 spaces. Nowadays, people don’t want 2 spaces, but I can’t help it.
Thank you for saying all of this. I’m a middle school speech-language pathologist, and I don’t usually get a picture of what is “typical” because almost every student I interact with has a diagnosed disability. I see all these deficits in my students— but I guess it’s good to know where my expectations should be. My daughter’s 9. I get overwhelmed sometimes thinking about her future. She has a friend who said she wanted to be a marine biologist. It made me so sad, like sweetie – the Ending Of A Nightmare January 20th 2025 Usa Flag Trump Election T-Shirt but in fact I love this oceans are going to be dead zones by the time you get out of college. Everything you think is wonderful like dolphins and whales will be dead. The previous generations who could graph and round and write cursive and all that jazz – their great ideas have led to what looks like the literal end of the world. It’s February and everything is budding, my daffodils are blooming, there are mosquitoes buzzing around. These kids today…they’ll never own houses or get married and have kids or retire or experience stability as adults – I just don’t see them with any sort of future at all. They’ll be squeezed for every last ounce of profit some algorithm can make off them while the world burns and everything dies. I wish kids today all the luck in the world.
I’m not a teacher, rather I’m a student who graduated HS last year, I definitely had these types of kids in my graduating class. I’d like to believe I don’t fall into any of these areas though My HS junior is in the Ending Of A Nightmare January 20th 2025 Usa Flag Trump Election T-Shirt but in fact I love this NHS and one of the things they do is teach kids at similar grade levels how to fucking read. high school math teacher and experiencing the same with my students. don’t know their times tables, can’t solve one variable equations. some students can but it’s not the majority Sad to say but the only ones successful are the ones who are naturally gifted or getting lots of support at home. The average kid.. isn’t learning shit. I have the utmost empathy for you. I can’t even begin to comprehend how tough teachers of teenage kids must have it today. That said, I have family in high school right now, and they’re excelling at their respective schools, getting good grades etc. it’s private school and the parents are very involved, so I’m sure that helps kids not fall behind. Some of my students insist punctuation doesn’t matter. They are 14+ and think it’s an extra thing but it doesn’t actually matter. Where are they getting that from? They don’t understand the concept of a single coherent thought of words that all go together. Just because they know how to use their phones does not mean they know how to use a computer. They are not familiar with common keyboard shortcuts. They also cannot type properly. Some students type using their index fingers. When I was growing up everyone had a PC. That’s how you got onto the internet. I still had computer classes in high school but I learned pretty much nothing, though of course you can guess my existing hobbies are to blame for that. Even still I am sure most of my classmates must have had exposure and I don’t recall noticing any of them struggling in those classes.
Today, everyone has a cell phone, which can access the Ending Of A Nightmare January 20th 2025 Usa Flag Trump Election T-Shirt but in fact I love this internet. There is no longer the need for a home PC for many people. So it is not surprising we are seeing kids starting to grow up with less PC exposure. It’s my understanding some kids will even do things like write essays using cell phones (I would not want to try this!), Mobile OSs are fundamentally differently structured than desktop OSs. A lot of that is down to lessons learned from the PC era. PCs can’t really change too much to match what mobile is doing due to decades of legacy software and other inertia. Example: On mobile apps are easy one click install and uninstall. On Windows app install and uninstall has been largely unchanged since the MS-DOS days, pretty much every app doing its own homebrew solution. The biggest change since then is how you get the app onto the PC. Of course MS is finally pushing modern app management and Linux has had their act together for decades in this regard… I casually mentioned WW2 as background to a story we’re reading, and no one had any clue what I was talking about. I mentioned Hitler, figuring that might jog their memories. Not a single kid had ever heard of him.
No research skills. The phrases they use to google are too vague when they search for information. For example, if I ask them to research the Ending Of A Nightmare January 20th 2025 Usa Flag Trump Election T-Shirt but in fact I love this 5 types of chemical reactions, they only type in “reactions” in Google. When I explain that Google cannot read minds and they have to be very specific with their wording, they just stare at me confused. But even if their search phrases are good, they do not click on the links. They just read the excerpt Google provided them. If the answer is not in the excerpts, they give up. Man, this is so sad, terrifying, disgusting, and frustrating at the same time. It’s like I’m looking at a drug addict who seems too lazy to do anything because any second spent doing something is a second not enjoying their addiction. Are them to blame? Is the maker of the addiction to blame? Is society to blame? I don’t even know whom to direct my anger toward anymore. And this isn’t a person. It’s a whole generation who didn’t know any better and we failed them, so they will fail us. When it happens and we lack an educated populace, it will be our fault, and the problems we will get will be consequences of our thoughtless actions.
I hate technology because of things like this. Nobody seems to care about what a piece of technology will do to society at a macro scale 20, 30 years down the Ending Of A Nightmare January 20th 2025 Usa Flag Trump Election T-Shirt but in fact I love this line. They’re only concerned with hitting a critical mass of users right now to make their quarters look better. If you have ever tried to use Bing, and sometimes I use Bing on Vivaldi because they pay Vivaldi if you do that, Bing results are the worst because the first thing it shows is a snippet from Microsoft’s newest AI. I don’t Google things to get answers. I Google things to learn knowledge. And self-learning was never for everybody. I’m not a teacher, but I do know some students do better by themselves, while others require more attention. Now if everyone relies on Google and underestimates the importance of teachers, because they have Google now, then everything is honestly doomed.
They say “just Google it.” In computing, we have a term called SPOF: single point of failure. A SPOF in a system is a point that, if it fails, the Ending Of A Nightmare January 20th 2025 Usa Flag Trump Election T-Shirt but in fact I love this whole system fails. A robust system has a few SPOFs as possible, and avoids as many dependencies as possible. Because dependencies mean exactly that, you will depend on it to work. People are depending on Google too much. If Google goes to shit (and it has been going since forever), then you can’t “just Google it.” Many times I Google something, and the first result is a Reddit thread asking some basic question, and the first answer is some smug redditor saying “Google is your friend.” That’s some sweet irony right there. Nobody thinks that for Google to exist, someone has to write the webpages that Google indexes. Someone has to write the text on Wikipedia. And to write them, they have to know what they are writing about, or everyone in the planet will get dumber as a result of it. The internet generation just takes all the information available on the internet for granted, as if God planted an information tree and all those articles just fell off it.
