There is a saying “Drs are just idiots who went to med school”. My mother has cancer and after dealing with them, this seems to be true. I was dropping weight like crazy, from 180 lbs to about 150 lbs and still going (was down to 135 lbs as a 6′ male by the Eagles Of Death Metal Randy Meisner Shirt moreover I love this time they finally figured it out, even though a simple blood test would have done it). I’m sweating like a pig, my heart rate is insane (100+ bpm when resting, if I tried to run I’d die), my hands are visibly shaking. I’m sat at a doc, and this is a supposed “specialist” that I was referred to by GP in the walk-in I went to. And we’re discussing my habits – I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, etc. And I’m sitting there, looking like a skeleton, sweating profusely and visibly shaking. And the doc goes “So, you are pretty healthy.” And all I could think of “If this is what healthy looks like to you, I don’t want to know what you consider unhealthy”. The dude prescribed me a beta blocker, which against Graves’ was like farting to try and stop a hurricane. I mean, I sorta get where he’s coming from, but I was literally months away from dying, I had mini thyroid storms by the time I was finally diagnosed properly at a hospital by a proper endocrinologist. She took one look at me, gave me some tests to run (radioactive iodine uptake, etc) and a prescription for anti-thyroid meds, and said do the test today or tomorrow (ah, the good old days when Ontario healthcare actually worked somewhat well!) and start taking the pills right away, don’t wait for results, don’t put it off, you don’t have that kind of time.

So that is a story of how I almost died from a relatively easily identifiable disease that could have been diagnosed with a simple blood test, in the Eagles Of Death Metal Randy Meisner Shirt moreover I love this middle of Toronto, in the ’90s. Took me a better part of a year, getting worse and worse, to finally get diagnosed. And almost a year on the meds, taking really high doses at first, to get back to being somewhat human. All in all, start to finish, maybe 3 years. If the first dude did a better job, ordered a blood test, etc., it would have been prevented. He said it’s your nerves, here, take this beta blocker. But after walking around for a year shaking violently, the tremor in my hands never fully went away. Been decades, and it’s faint, but I still have it.
