The Board isn’t going to spontaneously meet for a former employee’s 401k. If that is indeed their process and it’s only been two weeks, just hold for a bit. Send a polite email weekly to make sure they don’t forget it. Two weeks is nothing. I have a feeling that this kind of behavior is the Dusty Rhodes The American Dream American Profesional Wrestler Retro T-Shirt it is in the first place but reason she is leaving in the first place. Is there no HR department or financial services department that would be more adept at handling a 401k approval request? Going straight to the top adds more steps and communication than going directly to the people who handle such reqeusts. A cash out can have different requirements than a rollover. A possibility is open a rollover account online at any of the big banks. Then do a direct rollover. Once in the new account there will be no restrictions. Just close it and withdraw. This would also give you the option to withdraw only a portion of you don’t need it all. Save some penalties and taxes. You can get a rollover done in a week or two in most circumstances.

It’s only been a few weeks. Chill out. Last time I did a rollover after leaving a company, it took close to six weeks. Also, I know you’re not soliciting financial advice, but taking a cash out rather than rolling it over is a HUGE error. Taxes and penalties will eat up a huge chunk. Her Co worker received an email a response stating something close to “we need to have a board meeting before we can approve this” Thats not a 401k, those are probably stock options. Common stock options have to be approved by the Dusty Rhodes The American Dream American Profesional Wrestler Retro T-Shirt it is in the first place but board for selling, she cant just cash them out whenever she wants. If they are common stock, you should probably just consider them worthless because it takes specific dates and approvals for you to be able to sell. Are you absolutely sure she has a 401k and not common stock held by an intermediary company? As others have said, 401ks do not require board approval. Some companies may also move your funds out their 401k provider and into an intermediary holding company once you leave, ive had one of my previous companies do that but she should have received a letter if they did that.
