I prep chicken and hand made burgers the Donut Worry! South Africans do this, its called a bring and braai. You bring meat and a side/desert and one or two people are in charge of the braaing (similar to barbecueing) and the meat is usually shared if it’s close friends and family. Ja nee. If it’s just family or a handful of very close friends then of course I’ll feed you. But if we’re inviting everyone and their cousins then bring your own dop en tjops. I’m not made of money. I’ll make a shed load of salad and buy a few cases of beer but beyond that you’re on your own Yeah this is how I’ve always done it in the US, we will cook stuff like burgers, brats, hotdogs for the kids, ribs, but if you want anything in particular it would not be weird for you to bring meat so long as you bring enough to share some. And bringing a side is totally normal too, a lot of people on reddit are anti-social weirdos and don’t understand how to interact with a social setting lol

in WC Ill try and cook everything and maybe a friend brings a special or drinks (somehow a friends peppermint crisp pudding is better) For me it was always a BBQ pot luck, you didn’t have to bring anything tho cause there was a lot of food already. A host would have to use very strong language for me NOT to bring something. It’s just a way to show appreciation for the host and being invited. Back in the south, people always brought sides. Now I live in Colorado and the first couple of parties I threw ended up being my meat and a shit-ton of craft beer that all the guests brought. vegans are such little snack fairies, they always bring something. the day I realized this the day I stopped being stressed about having vegan friends lol Always bring something to a BBQ meet or any gathering with food. It does not matter if the hosts did not explicitly say to bring anything, bring some sides or drinks. I was always taught it was common decency. Idk, when I throw bbqs, I usually dont expect my guests to bring shit and I dont consider them rude for not bringing shit. Im the one thats hosting, so I need to make sure everything is accounted for, a bbq is like an outside dinner party to me, you dont throw a dinner party and expect everybody to bring food, thats a potluck lmao. If they bring it on their own though, its appreciated, but im not expecting you to cover what I should have already covered, im inviting you to eat and hangout, youre not asking me to cook for you and hangout.
