That said there are brands who really deliver on quality construction like Mara Hoffman. Everything I own from her looks almost brand new with proper care, and is super super well constructed (my tailor was shook by how sturdy a blazer was that I took in!) – but they have a price point to match. I think the Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt moreover I will buy this brands you mentioned are good quality. Some items from Fashion Nova and Shein really will fall apart after a few washes not to mention the environmental and societal impact those brands have. I saw this guy take apart the stitching on designer bags and a lot of them were made no differently than any quality leather bag. Anyway, when ppl say buy good quality, I think you’re doing just fine with a $100 J Crew cashmere

Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt: Express with Style

I would say when you see a post that puts down in some way a commonly liked or appreciated “thing” it’s really just an attempt at a “humble brag.” Im talking about the Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt moreover I will buy this “I’m so much [better, smarter, richer, more informed etc.] than you so im going to explain to you why the thing you and lots of other people like is bad” posts not the actual reviews or personal experiences. If you find stuff at these stores you like and last for you, ignore when people are being pretentious on social media. It’s more about their insecurities than actual quality of things. Edit to add none of my items from these stores feel cheap nor have they fallen apart. Myy only clothes that have really fallen apart (developed large holes in knees and in some seams out of nowhere, and when my kid thought they were funny and pulled on them, the fabric ripped) were from cheap supermarkets that really only do food well, not clothing.
My worst H&M shirt had lace starting to detach in a couple of spots, but I sewed it back on. I think that’s my only actual fashion retailer piece that had a problem. I only buy “fast fashion” (for many reasons, budget, constantly changing sizes, etc.) and I honestly can’t recall something ever “falling apart” on me. One of my favorites sweaters is 8 years old, from Walmart! I’m just mindful of how I wash it. I don’t see the Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt moreover I will buy this point of spending hundreds on a piece of clothing. I mean cool for people that can and do, but I’d be so nervous wearing such expensive clothes. I just know my cats or kids would destroy them. I finally stopped buying sweaters from J. Crew and Madewell this past year due to pilling poor quality. The three cashmere sweaters I bought last year all developed small holes despite careful care and hand washing. Even the more expensive ones I’ve purchased from Eileen Fisher and Theory haven’t held up well apart from a wool 3/4 sleeve that’s going on 10yrs old and still looks great. Some of my best wool/cashmere items are thrift store finds that were made in the 80s/90s and probably belonged to someone’s grandmother. I have f21 stuff that is in great condition a lot of wears after thrifting it. That said I also wash it on cold / cool water, in a more gentle cycle, and hang dry. Some things though just pill easily because of the fabric. This is ime more common in knits. Polyester etc. knits will pill really easily compared to cotton, for example.

Step by step to buy Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt

But none of the Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt moreover I will buy this brands you mentioned are fast fashion either. I personally consider those high end brands (with a step up from there being luxury). I have Madewell jeans from 5 years ago that still are in amazing shape. I have sweaters from JCrew from 7-8 years ago that are still in great shape. Heck, I have the old school Express Portofino shirts from 10+ years ago. As many have already expressed, all about taking care of your clothing. I wash on the delicates cycle (cold) and hang dry most of my work clothes (with the except of jeans). I hang dry all of my Lululemon, too. I separate my laundry loads by colors, as well. I have a friend who swears it doesn’t matter but a cream blouse from White House Black Market accidentally got put in the wash with a red LLL bra. The blouse came out pink. I think people also forget the importance of properly storing clothes. Don’t hang up heavy sweaters, fold them. Use hangers for the clothes you do hang up that are gentle (velvet or cloth covered if you can). If you’re gentle with your clothes, they’ll last.
I’m hard on my clothes, ergo I don’t buy delicate clothing. I’ve paid $65 for a buck Mason shirt that sustained holes faster than any shirt I’ve ever had, but probably because I did not wash it properly. I’m not going to blame Buck Mason. So much of how clothes last is truly just how you take care of them. If you are like me and are generally not the Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt moreover I will buy this best steward of your clothing or you know that you will never be the kind of person who can baby your clothes, you learn to look for certain fabrics and construction above price points. My J.Crew items have only been ruined when I do not follow the care directions. Hence why I never buy anything that requires dry cleaning anymore. If you have an iPhone and you scan the washing instructions tag with the camera it will decipher the symbols for you.
My clothing of all quality levels have become damaged. r/visiblemending and r/invisiblemending can help you learn some basic repairs. They do, or they dont last as long. If you dont have the Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt moreover I will buy this budget to be buying items that have high end materials and high end tailoring, then the next best thing is to learn how garments are constructed and what materials you like. For example I always look inside at the seams. Sure I would love some french or mock french seams, at a thrift shop, but most of the time I wont. So instead I look for serged edges that are some what neat, and the back stitching is even, neat and have a decent seam allowance. On top of that if you pick natural materials and dont wash them after every single wear or wash on a gentle cycle and line dry them, they last much longer. I have Forever 21 clothing I purchased in 2002 that is holding up just fine. My daughter is now wearing them!!!
Not all cheap fashion is made the Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt moreover I will buy this same. I bought a ribbed top from Zara for $50, and a different ribbed top from Glasson’s for $30 (an Australian/New Zealand fashion retailer) I can’t think of an equivalent maybe Forever 21 but more Y2K. Anyway, the Zara one quickly turned see through where as the glasson’s one is in perfect condition, go figure. And I use the Glassons one more because I think it’s slightly cuter. Edit to add after I read some comments: I wash all my stuff with cold water or for certain pieces I do a quick hand wash and then I hang dry all my stuff I don’t use a dryer ever. There is a difference between cheap and pricey cashmere, the same way with sushi. The cheap cashmere pills much quicker and just feels much rougher. Go in store to touch cashmere across price points and you’ll see what I mean. I have owned $100, $10,000 (coat) and everything in between for cashmere. If you can afford it, $500+ cashmere that gets discounted to about $350+ is the best bang for your buck (IMHO). I have t-shirts from Garage from 2010 that I’m still wearing. 2010!!! People really don’t take care of their clothes, or do weird shit in them and are shocked when they fall apart.
I have a physical job that involves lots of climbing ladders, kneeling, lifting heavy things, cutting wood, getting messy etc and my clothes from 6 years ago are still in good condition. My lululemon leggings I wear 1-2 times a week still look pristine. Wash in cold, hang to dry. That’s the Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt moreover I will buy this only secret. Heat breaks down the plastic that’s in every piece of clothing now. I find with all clothes, the care you give your garments directly correlate with how long something lasts. I wash most things in cold water and hang a lot of items, especially under undergarments, which I also put in a mesh bag. Sweaters that can be laundered I wash on gentle and dry on the drying rack. Denim is worn 3-5 times and I always wash inside out and hang to dry. A quick spin on low in the dryer gets rid of the air dried jean stiffness and also freshens up between wears! As far as brands, most of my jeans are from Madewell and i think they’re the best for me and go on sale so are a good price point (I wear jeans to work, so I have a lot of denim). I also shop JCrew and find it to be hit or miss, but have several sweaters I’ve had for a few years that are going strong. Jcrew Factory has gotten cheaper and cheaper and as a result, I buy less from them as they items don’t hold up long term. Some of the best basic items I own like socks, I’ve purchased from Amazon and Target.
Honestly, high price and brands don’t guarantee good quality. Budget fast fashion brands also can be great quality. I have a viscose H&M turtleneck that has lasted a decade, which I wear and machine wash 1-2x a week! Some expensive shit I bought hadn’t even lasted 2 years with CAREFUL washing. I had a pair of pants from Elizabeth Suzann get worn out SO fast. I think a lot of fashion communities see synthetic fibers as an instant no — but they can really help add some longevity and/or affordability to a piece of clothing. I also think it’s easy to fall for branding or not wanting clothes made in X country. Sezane imo is a good example of good branding, but the Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt moreover I will buy this quality is often just ok. My opinion on the J Crew Cashmere – I have four of their cashmere sweaters I have had for more than five years that are in fantastic condition even having been worn a lot. OTOH I bought one of the featherweight cashmere sweaters 2 years ago and I donated it – if you looked at it funny it pilled horribly. I knit so a few pills don’t bother me much, but this was pilling at a rate that I knew would destroy the sweater pretty quickly. All that said if you can find an older featherweight secondhand that looks smooth rather than fuzzy go for it. I regret getting rid of the one I used to have even though it was a color I never wore.
None of those brands are what I’d categorize as “cheap fashion.” Cheap fashion, to me, is H&M, drop shipping, anything by Shein. Madewell is pretty good, quality wise. I’m replacing a couple pairs of jeans right now that are wearing out in unfortunate places, but I’ve had them for 3-5 years, and this is expected for pants I wear several times a week in the Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt moreover I will buy this winter. Most of my cashmere sweaters are from Everlane, at least 4-7 years old, and cost about $100. They’ve lasted fine with minimal pilling and shape loss. I haven’t had any shrinkage. I also handwash them only as needed and dry flat. The sweater I’ve had to use my sweater-shaver on the most recently is my Ralph Lauren thick wool/angora/cashmere I got on Thredup; but it shaved up a treat and looks great.
On quality, I’ve found the Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt moreover I will buy this most problems with Anthro on that list, but “Anthro” is also a conglomeration of brands. You can look when you go in and buy in person: look for loose threads, seams that don’t match, puckered seams, and feel the fabric. Honestly, I have no idea what people are doing to their clothes because I shop at basic places like Target and Walmart and rarely do I ever have clothes falling apart. The only thing I refuse to switch brands on is underwear, of all things. I bought some from Aerie and they fell apart after two washes. My stuff from PINK/VS is still going strong, and I usually throw them away because underwear become inevitably gross after a while, not because of any fabric issues. i think it depends on the material more than anything. i have a few dresses from madewell (one is silk, one is all (or mostly?) cotton) and both have held up for years and don’t look any different than when i bought them. that being said i’ve bought some t-shirts from them and one pair of jeans years ago and they look like junk lol. the jeans are comfortable, but they look way worse in half the time than a pair of gap jeans i thrifter and have had for twice as long (just as an example).
my experience with sezane has been positive so far, but i do treat them very delicately since they cost so much. if i wore them like i wore most of my clothing, i don’t know how they’d hold up over time. j crew i’ve primarily thrifted and they’ve held up pretty well. anthropology as well. my favorite jeans right now are a thrifted pair of anthropology jeans. overall my favorite for quality is everlane. i buy primarily when they’re discounted, and i don’t think i’ve ever had a bad experience with their clothing. i did have a t-shirt from them that ended up getting little holes in it, but i was pretty reckless with it and got years of wear from it regardless. Yes. And for the Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt moreover I will buy this love of all things holy, AVOID FAKE LEATHER. Not only is it shoddy and will only last about a year or two tops, it’s extremely toxic to all living things, including people. I’m a wildlife biologist and I did my thesis on the stuff. I’d set out to find whether PVC and PU were indeed better for humans and the environment than real leather, and boy was I shocked by the findings.
At every level, from sourcing raw materials to manufacturing to ordinary wear, fake leather is absolutely atrocious. It off gases fumes that the Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt moreover I will buy this EU and EPA describe as “no save level of exposure”. Yet they still allow clothiers to practically drape us in the stuff. Patent leather is EVERYWHERE in fast fashion. I think it’s far better to invest in a few really high quality pieces that will last for years and years, that can be coordinated into multiple outfits each. I bought a beautiful leather trenchcoat that goes with everything I own, and I thrifted several Moschino, Coach, and Gucci shoes that are extremely well made and I’ve had since 2010. Each brand can really vary. Rather than focusing on the brand name I try to look at each piece because things like fiber content and construction are factors that can determine the quality and longevity. I tend to avoid most synthetic knits because a lot of those fibers (especially acrylic) will pill quicker. Fabrics like woven viscose and rayon are common because they give a similar hand to cotton but have a bit more drape, but personally I find them a little harder to care for vs a woven cotton fabric. Free People is expensive but most of their fabrics are TERRIBLE. Lots of cheap, thin, synthetic blends. But they do have some pieces that are 100% cotton that I might buy now and then. I just bought a pair of Old Navy jeans that are 100% cotton for $13 and I love them and plan to keep them for a long time. I’m predicting they might hold up decently because in other pieces, elasticity in stretch fabrics breaks down over time especially if you’re throwing these pieces in the dryer. It’s not always practical to get jeans with no stretch like the ones I found, but that’s just a personal preference I have as a shopper thinking about the long term.
Some brands are just very hit or miss. Each buyer is going to have their own standards of what they’ll tolerate and at which price point. I don’t really buy much fast fashion but have a few bits. I also had a wardrobe made almost entirely of high end, designer pieces when I was 18 (my parents were dumb with money). I still, at 36, have a Prada jumper that I wore religiously every winter for years that looks great now. I also have some jumpers I bought from high street shops (M&S, Next, etc) a few years ago that look tired and wan. I treat all these clothes the Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt moreover I will buy this same. I have never ever had something fall apart… Of course I had pilling or some holes but maybe I have a different definition of falling apart. I think that it may be through putting everything through a dryer and not separating everything well enough. I hang dry all my clothes and normally do a wash at 40-30 degrees. I separate heavy laundry from light weight laundry and colours from whites.
I am thrifter and fast fashion shopper. Rarely will I buy something new, and if I do, it is from Burlington, Maurices, something like that. My clothes hold up pretty well. I wash regularly and usually dry almost everything except bras and hoodies. I also wash everything on cold and air dry most of my things (minus socks, some pairs of underwear, and my lazy/sleep clothes). I also have a Madewell dress and several tops- I believe I’ve had the Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt moreover I will buy this dress for 6 years and the tops for 3. All in great shape! I have a Free People sweater that I’ve had for at least 10 years- it’s my absolute fave and is amazing condition. How you care for an item definitely affects how long it lasts, but I think there’s also a huge difference between clothing from fast fashion brands 10-15 years ago vs now. I have a $17 midi dress from F21 that I bought circa 2009-2010 that you’d never guess was “fast fashion.” The fabric is thick, has classic lines and doesn’t have that clingy jersey feel that most cheap midi dresses have today. I also think that the difference in quality between intermediate brands like Madewell/Anthro/BR and budget brands is not as stark as it once was, and certainly not proportional to the cost difference. (Not clothing, but there was an Anthro bar cart that I deeply coveted, until I stumbled on the same exact product on Wayfair for $100 less. The scales fell from my eyes that day, friends.)
For the Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt moreover I will buy this sake of sustainability and to save $$, I’m trying to buy/chase trends less, but I do get why people opt for cheaper clothes because spending more doesn’t necessarily guarantee a better or more long-lasting product. They always get holes in them no matter what, I have sweaters from 2008 from mall stores that have lasted longer than any cashmere or wool sweaters I’ve owned. And the only reason I threw them out was because they had bad armpit staining from back when I would use aluminum deodorant. Low tier brands aren’t so much low quality as they are inconsistent. They just don’t really care – if it’s high quality, then great. If not, so be it. You can get great quality pieces from them by chance, it’s just a roll of the dice. Maintenance matters. Washing less often, washing on cold, and not using excessive product makes a difference. So many people wash after one wear, on hot, and with every bleach and softener they can find.
It depends on the Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt moreover I will buy this brand. It’s not a perfectly linear graph. Free people sells $150 dresses, but they’re no better quality than the $25 dress at H&M. I’ve worked for both Madewell and Anthro and Madewell’s quality far surpasses Anthro’s internal brands. Those internal Anthro brands are 100% fast fashion disguised as specialty. They have nice relationships with better brands, though. I’ve had a Madewell tote bag for nine years and it looks amazing. I’ve also had jeans for seven years from Madewell. The key to all clothing longevity is taking care of the fibers properly- I see lots of great comments sharing how to do that. How you care for your clothing can make a difference. However, go walk the thrift stores and see what sweaters still look good 20, 40 years later. Hardy 100% cotton and 100% wool. You can definitely find some polyester stuff that is still kicking but who wants to wear polyester. Construction matters too. Feel something nicely made and then feel a sweater from Sezane for example. Sezane feels cheap and plasticky. You can definitely find nice things at any store but you have to dig. The fashion experts (I’m not one of them) swear by shopping the mens side of the store for higher quality pieces. I can confirm this is definitely true at JCREW. I have a lot of old navy clothes. Like, a lot of them. Unfortunately I learned the hard way not to put cotton dresses in the dryer too much or they get holes. I usually only wash on a cold delicate cycle, and tumble dry low. I would probably hang my clothes if I had a washer. Depends on a lot of factors including care, fiber content, and frequency of wear. I have a $20 unlined Old Navy jacket that I’ve had for 6 or 7 years and is still in great shape — I don’t wear it a lot (it’s Christmas/New Year’s appropriate) and never put it in the dryer. I’ve had tee-shirts that lasted little more than a year before they started to develop holes near the waistline — probably due to contact with the waistband of my jeans, and some knits are pre-treated to make them softer in a way that degrades the fibers a bit.
I have found there are a few ways of identifying higher-quality items that will last over time, that are fairly universal. Real pockets on jackets vs “decorative” flaps (they may be tacked shut — if you can stick the Don’t tread on Santa with guns 1776 United shirt moreover I will buy this tip of your finger into gaps on either side, it’s a real pocket and the stitching can be carefully cut open). Binding or reinforcement on inside neck seams vs an exposed seam. Patterns that match/align at side seams. (I own inexpensive Amazon tees that have stripes matched at the side seams, and have seen expensive items that don’t.) Super soft knits that are all cotton IME don’t hold up, but if the super soft knit is cotton is mixed with polyester or rayon, it’s more likely to last. High rayon content generally is found in cheaper items and it’s prone to shrinking.
