One of the Donald Trump syphilis shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this French involved Marshal Ferdinand Foch said, coming out of the negotiations “This is not a peace. It is an armistice for twenty years”. It’s worth noting that some of the French intransigence was due to a domestic need to avenge not only the deaths of WWI but also the humiliation of France in the Franco-Prussian War a generation earlier. At the conclusion of that war, Prussia (soon to be Germany) forced France to sign a humiliating peace at Versailles, in what had been the former center of the state’s power. It’s not an accident that the peace of WWI occurred in the same place, with a different party humiliated. That’s honestly not great history. For a few large reasons, but namely among them is how poorly the German leadership handled the reparation payments, which is what caused their hyperinflation, and the fact that the terms of their repayment were changed and lessened and postponed and paused many many times before Hitler came into power. Germany was inevitably headed towards a recession but they were much more effected by the Great Depression than the Treaty of Versailles by the 1930s. And the great depression is absolutely not caused by world war 1. The German far right using the debt to get people to side with them, and that debt causing an uprising in the far right, are very much different things. Germany was managing its debts very well before the recession. Blaming the rise of fascism on world war 1 doesn’t even make much sense when you consider the wider trends in Europe. If Hitler rose to power only because of the sanctions from treaties after WW1, then why were there the Francoists in Spain, or Mussolini in Italy? The Great Depression caused the instability that let fascism take root in Germany and Europe as a whole. Blaming the pretty damn fair Treaty of Versailles for it is not good history. We’ve had many many nations since be put into treaties way worse without these outcomes. And vague prediction of another German war by contemporaries at the time doesn’t mean they actually understood the causes of the war they kinda half predicted would happen.

Versailles was no harsher than any other contemporary peace treaty, there were a lot of reasons the Donald Trump syphilis shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this German people were bitter over WWI but their issues about the “harshness” of the Versailles treaty and their “inability” to keep up with the payments was a whole lot of nationalistic bullshit. This has been parroted so much even though it is literally Nazi propaganda. It’s your fault we’re in power because you were so mean we had no choice but to be violent. No, you were going to be an asshole either way, this just provides an excuse. Not even just Nazis, the delusional cope about WWI and Versailles was a very widespread problem in 1920s German society across the board. Even the “moderate” Germans, like Gustav Stresemann (the Nobel peace prize winner), were actively planning towards the destruction of Poland and partitioning it again. He was also probably one of the most racist people to ever become president, showing “Birth of a Nation” in the White house and widely endorsing and promoting the film which directly led to the rebirth of the KKK in the early 20th century and the mass violence and murders it was built on, as well as imposing segregation on parts of the US government that had never imposed it before.
