I cannot make out any sort of human shape which I had expected going in based on stories and books. But you can clearly see the shadow of some sort of pole etched into the surface. In this corner of the world is a great movie that showcases prewar life in Japan upto the aftermath of Hiroshima. It follows a young girl who lived in a nearby village. It goes from being a pretty happy movie, to a depressing tale. It doesn’t sugar coat anything, but it’s at least not as gut wrenching as grave of the fireflies… I wouldn’t just assume that it ‘prevented an invasion’. Not that I’m sure it did or didn’t, but there’s scholarship resisting that idea. The US government was a bit in the dark about how the Japanese population would react to an invasion. They had academics with little to no actual Japanese experience tell them about ‘the Japanese mind’. For example Ruth Benedict (The Chrysanthemum and the Sword: Patterns of Japanese Culture). This slightly old fashioned, ignorant thinking about different ethnicities contributed to the US government thinking that the Japanese people would act as one in obedience to their emperor (part of the reason they decided to keep the emperor when they occupied). We got better at delivery, but we’ve never built a bigger bomb (one that was tested anyway) than the Tsar Bomba. I think everyone involved realized that at that point, going bigger risked doing far more collateral damage than it was worth. Honestly, I’m just glad we realized how bad an idea it was to use low level nukes for construction as that had far more potential to do widespread harm as the effects would take much longer to play out, which would effectively have resulted in irradiating vast amounts of our own land ourselves.

The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki served a few purposes. Unconditional surrender, political expediency for Truman , and sent a clear message to Stalin. As horrific as the atom bomb was to use on people, it’s hard to imagine history going any other way for the better. Then, even if Japan surrenders without invasion, or blockade and just unconditionally surrenders to the US in the same way; the Soviets still get a bomb within ~5 years. Without the living history of its use; does the Cold War go a different direction? Japan was not really willing to surrender. Their “surrender” had them retaining some of the areas they took during the war, so not really a surrender.
