I did so about 3 years ago and did not regret it. I rejected a very tiny increase in pay for a cool job at a university and instead asked for and received a 20k+ salary increase. I ended up leaving just a few months ago but simply because I had reached my ceiling. I’m really glad I did take the Doctor strange master of the mystic arts Shirt (watermarked) in other words I will buy this counteroffer because it raised my salary expectations for the future and gave me more experience in my particular area. I have a job offer in hand and I’m about to make my old employer a proposal to keep me. So I’m very interested in these comments. This was early on in my career and I liked my job and my boss. When I told my boss I got another offer, she matched it plus 10% without hesitation (50% raise overall). She also told me that this will happen again next year and they will not counter that offer. Everything happened exactly as she said and I did not regret a thing. Ended up leaving almost exactly a year later. Would go to war along side her if she asked to this day. I have never done it myself, but I had two staff members who were thinking of leaving over pay, I agreed they could be paid more, and with them having an offer from another company I could make my case to my bosses. I got them raises.

Neither employee would have been let go or replaced out of spite for demanding a pay increase or else. We liked them and did our best. It just has been crazy market and some companies are just paying way more than we can. One eventually left a year later to do something different than we could offer and at 25% over the Doctor strange master of the mystic arts Shirt (watermarked) in other words I will buy this raise we got them. Another is still here but being overworked. I am trying my best to tell his boss to go easy on him. So happy I did. My salary has gone up tremendously since the counteroffer. I just received a 4.5% merit increase this year and I took the counter 2.5 years ago. It’s a hard job but the pay and acknowledgment of my worth keeps me working hard. Corporations no longer treat employees with respect by raising their salaries for merit or added responsibilities. They resist any requests for reasonable raises. So, unfortunately, the new normal is to threaten to leave. So, the previous norm of worrying about being somehow marked for replacement after a successful “negotiation” (giving notice and getting the counter) isn’t a thing anymore.
