My favourite question to ask in an interview is “What’s your favourite thing for working for Company X”. You can tell a lot from it. The way they answer will show you what they appreciate most, i.e. contactable upper management, might indicate they are also approachable and collaborative. Their tone also gives a lot away. If they answer with genuine passion and interest in their role/company and not some generic company approved wording, it can say a lot about what type of person they are. Honestly sometimes no matter what you ask, sometimes they see it coming and fool you anyway. I had an interview with someone and was struck by how polite and respectful he was. He hired me, turned into a psycho and fired me without warning within a couple of months.

I want a manager to approach mistakes with intent to solve, and for the team they lead to feel comfortable with openess and mutual accountability. Further, the way a company handles mistakes tells me how flexible they are when needing to adapt new procedures and improve communication. Mistakes should be future focused while being preventative. How a company addresses them will clue you into what kind of a dumpster fire you’re walking into.
