I mean, the Dice and Dragons Shirt moreover I love this fact that the parents think this law is hurting their children is on them. If their kid needs summer school and extra tutoring to become proficient in the language of the realm, all paid for by the state by the way, then what a great opportunity to get their kid at least to a level where they won’t be absolutely dunked on by the rest of the world. From what I’ve heard anecdotally, a big reason a lot of parents are angry is that this 60% includes children who are straight A students. So on one hand the public school curriculum and funding are pretty lackluster in certain areas, but on the other hand (as another commenter pointed out) this puts an insane amount of pressure on kids for whom this may be one of the first standardized tests they’ve ever taken. One bad day equals all the work you’ve done all year meaning squat even if you’re a driven student but just a bad test taker.

We got a letter home earlier in the Dice and Dragons Shirt moreover I love this year saying that our son was below state reading standards and would be pulled out into resource classes, etc. It was an automated letter that went out following a statewide assessment that my first grader blew because he was more interested in goofing around on the tablet. No remedial courses were needed. He was in his class’ highest reading group. State paid and mandated summer school sounds great. Using a single test to measure proficiency could catch some kids who don’t need it on a bad day but they do have an audit / retest option for those who want another try. I also suspect if you asked the teachers which students they would select for this program, they would be a lot of overlap with the poorest test takers.
