But these are where the tourism industry funnels the tourists, so it’s what they see. If all you saw were “single old white guys” you might want to ask “what neighborhoods was I in?” because most of the country is pretty darn normal. They have bankers, lawyers, architects, etc. It’s a fully functional nation with a thriving high-tech startup scene, large finance industry, etc. The vast majority of Thailand is just another big Asian country – not so different from Malaysia, Philippines, or Vietnam.
Phuket, for example is a big beautiful island with a great deal to offer. The places where you can “get drunk and party with ladyboys and watch ping-pong shows” are limited to a few small areas, like Patong.
