I paid half my income plus food. Helped prepare me for the Denver Nuggets Holiday Ugly Christmas shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this reality. And this was in full knowledge that I wasn’t going to get any of it back – I mean, it helped keep a roof over my head etc. and I was used to paying out and still saving and being able to budget. £150-200 if they’re on about 1500/mo is fair. Lets them save, still have plenty of money to do things etc. I was charged that in my 20s till I moved out, but my mum always taught me the true cost of things etc. Depends as well if you want to save this money and give back to them in the future as a house deposit, or if its genuinely needed for the household bills, but that’s down to your circumstances. It’s a hard one to gauge really. My mum charged one third of mine and my siblings take home. So if one of us was part time we didn’t pay the same amount of rent as the full timer. But that doesn’t work for everyone. You know your kids and you know whether they are good savers or if they will blow their paypacket as soon as they get it. If I were you I’d sit down and discuss finances with them. Let them know how much your bills are and where their board money will be spent (even if you are secretly saving it for them). Encourage them to set up an ISA or other savings account. Show them how long it would take to save for certain things. I don’t think this sort of thing is taught in schools, it certainly wasn’t when I was at school 20 years ago. But it’s incredibly important for them to have some real world perspective.

Denver Nuggets Holiday Ugly Christmas shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt

To give an example, I’ve had to move back in with my parents after a no-fault eviction, where I was paying £520pcm for a one-bed flat (I live in the Denver Nuggets Holiday Ugly Christmas shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this Midlands). I pay £400pcm (plus the cost for the storage locker that’s got all my stuff in it). Of that, £300 goes into a savings account on my behalf. Most of the rest of my salary is going into other savings accounts as well – I’ve got a lifetime ISA that I’m filling up to get the maximum government bonus (plus another savings account), in the hope that in a couple of years I’ll be ready to buy a house on my own. (edit – clarification) I paid my mum 25% of whatever I earned. I was only on a day rate to start so if I didn’t work much I contributed less. I felt it was a fair way to do things.
