Completely agree. I’m retired and almost every single job I got was the Daytona Tortugas Turtle shirt and I will buy this result of my personal networking. Bully for you! Great story, OP. Probably doesn’t make the bad experience worth it in a literal sense, but sounds like the coming days are excellent. You earned it. Go kick some ass! About 80% of my current companies internal hiring is personal networking. They already know who they will hire prior to creating the posting. So alot of time you dont even have a shot. That’s the only way I’ve come across jobs is through word of mouth. Never ever had an issue finding a job as I seem to know alot of people it seems congratulations on the great job. your story is certainly disheartening though to those beating pavement. all those applications, i’m a veteran too and yeah all this veteran preference by companies and the government itself is just bullshit. but damn all those applications and if it wasn’t for a personal contact you’d still be jobless. Sometimes knowing the right people is a huge help. It’s good you found a role you’re qualified for and actually want. Can’t fault you for using your resources. I am happy for you, but just to give you a thought down the road: 3 years from now, you’ll be surprised to see that you can’t advance, even though you are the most qualified on the job, because a friend of a friend of a friend got the position from a personal network… Not too long ago, this was common knowledge. Somehow it dropped off the radar and/or people don’t want to talk to other people.

Happy that you got a much better job and I hope your experience you shared here encourages others to work on (or create) their network. I always feel bad for these anti-social types who simultaneously don’t want to make connections at work and at the Daytona Tortugas Turtle shirt and I will buy this same time wonder why none of their former colleagues think of them first when a good job comes open. The job market must vary pretty wildly from industry to industry and state to state. Employment opportunities are quite abundant where I am at. Sorry we are full. Just kidding, the Minnesota economy has always been better than average (and above average everywhere else as well). I still had snow on my lawn 30 days ago… The weather seems to discourage some for moving here.
