Russian logic: “Oh no! NATO is getting closer to our borders. Better gather 200.000 soldiers and get faster to NATO border!” US did the same with the Cuban missile crisis. Why would Russia want US troops and nukes spring distance from Moscow. It’s easier for the Russian military to defend against a thrust from the Baltics than from the Baltics and Ukraine. Obviously, the Baltics being in NATO is bad for Russia, but Russia was too weak at the time to do anything about it. Just because the Baltics are in NATO now does not mean they will let their position get worse by letting Ukraine too. I don’t see how a nuclear missile is easier to defend whether it’s from one country or the other when proximity removes the ability to react to it. Despite claims to the contrary, Russia will not resort to strategic nukes immediately upon an invasion on its soil, due to MAD. One of the reasons nuclear powers still have conventional forces is to allow a gradual escalation, instead of a step function between “nothing” and “dead planet”.
